Jan-21-12  Xeroxx: Am I the only one who cares about the C group??
Jan-21-12  AlphaMale: There's a line here about groupies but I can't quite think how to frame it.

  moronovich: <Penguincw> Thanks for showing.

It is certainly not an every day structure :)

No problem. The game hadn't come out yet so I actually had to do it by hand. :-\

Meanwhile:

Not even 2 hours of play. :-\

Another interesting pawn structure:

Jan-22-12  LDJ: Schut has been crushed by Grover in 24 moves today. The rest day comes at the right moment for her, I think.

Penguincw: There's an enormous rating difference (242 points). Rest day for her, comes right in time. She has to face Sadler (with white) afterwards.
Jan-22-12  goodevans: After Sadler's sixth consecutive draw, perhaps Schut can be more confident of a better result in the next game.

Before the tournament a lot of folk were predicting that Sadler would walk group C, perhaps even with a 100% score. He has hardly set the tournament alight so far and seems to be doing his best to prove them all wrong.

He used only 31 minutes today, but with tomorrow being a rest day I wouldn't have thought he needed to conserve his energy. He has 5 rounds left to turn it around but frankly I can't see it happening, particularly with 2 of his remaining opponents apparently on better form than he is.

Jan-22-12  Marmot PFL: <Penguincw> Too many mismatches in this C group, with 2600 players vs people under 2300.

I know. However, when the 2600 players win the group, they'll go to Group B next year where it will be much harder.

Peligroso Patzer: The position in Tikkanen vs. Haast after <60. ... Rg8+>:

... is not the type of f- and h-pawn Rook ending that offers any hope of a successful defense. Black is just wasting time by playing on, but as the saying goes, Haast makes waste.

Jan-22-12  HSOL: Btw, anyone knows why Turov is playing in the C group and not the B group? He is afterall rated higher than nine (if I counted correctly) participants in the B group.
Jan-22-12  LDJ: If I recall correctly, Turov won a tournament held in the Netherlands last year (BDO) which guaranteed him a spot in the C group of Tata.
Jan-22-12  Interbond: Sadler said before the tournament that he is not as good as he used to be in spite of his high ELO.

Penguincw: < "Russia’s Maxim Turov, the sole leader in this group at the outset of Sunday’s round, dropped half a point to Britain’s Matthew Sadler, allowing Sweden’s Hans Tikkanen to come alongside in the first spot on the strength of a win in 68 moves with white from a Reti against Holland’s Anne Haast." >

Now it's a brand new tournament.

Jan-23-12  Robed.Bishop: <Marmot PFL: Winning them all might be suspicious, unless your name is Fischer. Seems he took my advice.>

Indeed. I would have advised him to keep on winning to maintain his lead, but what do I know?

That's how the girls gain rating points, the fast way!

Come on Lisa, keep it tight...

Except that the 2600 players won't both top the group.

Penguincw: < "Sweden’s Hans Tikkanen and Russia’s Maxim Turov both won their games to remain tied for first place in this group. In the same group, Holland's Lisa Schut achieved her first WGM norm after drawing her game against England's Matthew Sadler." >

This world is going to be one WGM better soon.
