Jul-24-07  tal lover: In her page there is a game from 1990 strange , must be another M Roy
Jul-24-07  technical draw: <tal lover> Check the official site. It says she's 11 years old and there's a nice write-up in French.
Jul-24-07  pawnofdoom: Too bad Roy is starting off with a 0% score
It says she's from Canada, but does anyone know what her rating is?

Jul-26-07  pawnofdoom: Why did they have Myriam Roy play? She's rated 400 points below everyone else

Me too - great win for Jovanka.

sisyphus: <Why did they have Myriam Roy play?> You'll have to ask the Quebec Chess Federation, which nominated her "to represent Canada and Quebec." Everyone else seems to have qualified on the basis on results in international tournaments.

From looking at her web site, I'd surmise that her father and the authorities in Quebec have been cooperating to promote her.

I have doubts about the whole business.

Jul-27-07  percyblakeney: Not easy for an 11-year-old to face so much stronger opponents, Cramling is more than 600 points higher rated. There are some women with a much higher rating than Roy in Canada, even if none of them seem strong enough to have any chance to compete in a tournament like this one.

J Houska vs I Krush, 2007

Eric Schiller: It used to be quite common for any tournament to include a local player, much lower rated. It added to local news interest and provided a great opportunity for locals to get valuable experience. I also led to some brilliant play as the "rabbit" was ensnared by the top GMs.

So I have no problem with the policy, and I regret that it has almost disappeared as elite tournaments have been maximized for rating. The events are less interesting, and we don't get the amazing upsets like Kovacevic vs. Fischer.

sisyphus: Aw, Eric, I've got nothing against a "favorite son", even if they're last seed. But this is a child, and not a very experienced one. What will happen to her, being held in a spotlight and placed in an environment where she's completely outclassed?
Jul-28-07  Octavia: Is today the last / 7? Then why have we only results up to 4?
Jul-28-07  Octavia: Today Pia is playing against Keti. Jovanka plays Cristina. These games determine the winner/s
Jul-28-07  Octavia: Pia came from snowy Sweden to live in sunny Spain, married with 1 daughter. Keti came from sunny Georgia to live in rainy Scotland, married with 1 daughter.

don't know too much about Jovanka, except that she's English.

Eric Schiller: Pia is married to GM Juan Bellon and their daughter Anna, now 5, should be playing in competition this year, maybe even in Gibraltar in January, where they have participated in every annual event since its inception. I played a few practice games with Anna last year, she has some talent!
Jul-29-07  Karpova: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...

Pia Cramling won ahead of Javakhishvili and Houska

Jul-29-07  PaulKeres: "technical draw: <jtd200> and <Paul Keres> check out: J Houska vs I Krush, 2007"

Thanks <technical draw> :)

Aug-01-07  Astardis: So Cramling wins undefeated with +3 and only manages a rating performance of 2509 - does that mean she gets punished with a rating drop for winning a tournament?
Aug-01-07  Karpova: She doesn't get punished for winning a tournament. The only thing that counts for her rating is the performance and her opponents were much lower rated than her. So a 2533 was expected to do better.
Aug-03-07  wanabe2000: To: Eric Schiller. After some research, it seems that Kovacevic was 15 years old at the time of this game.

sisyphus: <wanabe2000> After looking at the chessgames.com biography of Vladimir Kovacevic, it seems he was born in 1942, making him 28 when he beat Fischer (and older than Bobby).
