Mar-19-09  dumbgai: **** Sebag, never rooting for that girl again. Anyways Humpy and Hou should stop playing in these women's tournaments where they have to score +5 just to keep their rating.
Mar-19-09  dumbgai: <Any way good exciting chess all along, which I never expected from women's tournament!>

The women always play exciting chess, but I'm not so convinced about "good". Compared to men's GM events, this was an absolute blunderfest.

Mar-19-09  Ragh: Congrats to Koneru Humpy for winning the title unshared!
Mar-19-09  Ladolcevita: <dumbgai>
Yeah....but maybe its because participation in this match is necessary to be qualified for Women World Championship in the future.
Mar-19-09  weisyschwarz: Nice showing by Elina Danielian. I doubt anyone figured her to do this well in such a high-quality field.
Mar-19-09  dumbgai: Man, not a good tournament for Cramling/Stefanova/Chibu.
Mar-20-09  dramas79: About this Nd5 blunder from Marie Sebag, I think people are underestimating Black's potential here. Even if Nd5 was not played, black has (IMHO) a good plan of Qf3, Nh5 followed by the rook lift on the a file if the white queen leaves the f1-a6 diagonal. On the other hand, with the f8 rook guarding, a quick attack on black's king appears unlikely. Thus, it appears to me that a black win is not impossible without the blunder.
Mar-20-09  dramas79: < Nice showing by Elina Danielian. I doubt anyone figured her to do this well in such a high-quality field.> Actually, I think she is much better. Humpy for one has had problems. I think this is Koneru's first win against her. For some reason, cg.com does not show Elina's wins against Koneru earlier (I am positive that Koneru has lost to Danielian in the past).
Mar-20-09  HolyKnight: I like the way Chess Base makes sure the pictures of all the lady chess players is out there. I'm not sure why on the female side of chess is the rating AND LOOKS, is important.

I guess on the man side of chess Grischuck and Perez are the only real good looking Male GMs.

Mar-20-09  dumbgai: <HolyKnight> Because based purely on rating and chess skill, most women chess players would be lost among the many male GMs who are stronger players. Why else would people pay attention to games between low 2500s? Kosteniuk's overall world ranking isn't even in the top 600.
Mar-20-09  ex0duz: I'd still watch it. Most times it's much more exciting, and their games feel more 'real' and 'human' to my patzer eyes. :p

Also, they seem to play more OTB chess than letting their fritz and memory do the playing, if you know what i mean. -_-

Yes, this means they are objectively weaker, but the games are more interesting to me, even if they have higher blunder percentage, and even if their first choice matches up with Rybka alot less..

It's the same reason that we also like to watch Amber. The games are arguably more exciting, quality of play doesn't have to be computer like to be enjoyable. Oh yeah, i forgot to mention that watching womens matches live would also add another level of 'eye candy'. :)

<HolyKnight: I guess on the man side of chess Grischuck and Perez are the only real good looking Male GMs.>

Who's Perez? This guy? Lu Perez

Never heard of him. lol.

As for good looking guys.. Dominguez(his GF is pretty hot too, heh), Morozevich(yes!), and i think that Maxim Rodstein(sp?) guy, the 2650+ player from Israel. He's like the Israeli version of Grischuk, they both have the long pretty boy hair.. haha

Mar-20-09  Jim Bartle: It's sort of like the difference between the NBA and NCAA basketball. They're both entertaining, though one is on a higher level.
Mar-20-09  dumbgai: Being a straight male my assessment might be way off the mark, but Morozevich seems like a rather handsome fellow.

<ex0dus> In general I think games between IMs and lower GMs tend to be more exciting and 'real' than 2700 level. Personally I still prefer to watch classical games at the highest level.

<Jim Bartle> Great analogy! All three of my teams won yesterday (my undergrad institution UCLA, my graduate institution Michigan, and my favorite NBA team LA Lakers). :D

Mar-20-09  Jim Bartle: UCLA just scraped by, I guess. Of course my U, Stanford, didn't even make the tourney.

Both UCLA and Michigan have certainly had some great teams in the past. I guess that's an understatement.

Mar-20-09  HolyKnight: I ment this Perez,
Leinier Dominguez-Perez
Mar-20-09  HolyKnight: Than on the other side of the coin, I'm not sure too many people would say Gelfand is a hunk! LOL

Mar-20-09  Jim Bartle: OOh, that's mean.
Mar-20-09  brucejavier: soo whats next for miss Hou, shes shy of the 2600+ barrier by only 10ELO points. That would make history!
Mar-21-09  Ladolcevita: <What is your next tournament? ¨C "Maybe the World Youth Championship in Turkey. I would play in the boys¡¯ section."

Would it be a bit boring to play with the girls? ¨C "No, but I want to try something else. I want to challenge myself. I want to try the boys.">

I'm not sure, but maybe its this one.

Mar-21-09  praddy06: All time Top women player with their peak ratings

Judith Polgar - 2735 (Jul-2005)
Koneru Humpy - 2622 (Jul-2008)
Hou Yifan - 2578 (Oct-2008)
Susan Polgar - 2577 (Oct-2005)
Xie Jun - 2574 (Jan-2008)
Stefanova Antoaneta - 2560 (Jan-2003)
Cramling Pia - 2550 (Oct-2008)
Maia Chiburdanidze - 2550 (Oct-2000)
Zhu Chen - 2548 (Jan-2008)
Sofia Polgar - 2540 (Dec-1999)
Kosteniuk Alexandra - 2540 (Apr-2006)
Muzychuk Anna - 2540 (Jan-2009)

Mar-21-09  percyblakeney: Shen Yang was the draw queen of the tournament, and still she drew less than half her games.
Mar-21-09  bharatiy: <percy> I think we can not get into draw percentage when players are not equally rated and also highly rated. Draw percentage holds value only in 2700+ tournaments.
Mar-21-09  dumbgai: Also, more 0-1 games than 1-0.
Mar-22-09  percyblakeney: <bharatiy>

Indeed, here the difference in rating was big between some of the players. The most surprising thing is maybe that usually stable players like Chiburdanidze, Cramling and Stefanova all lost as many as four games each.
