Feb-16-11 | | culei: I never saw as many tournaments as this year
Even though someclassic tournaments like linares will be gone wich is very sad but who cares
There are many more just with a new name to make a new legend instead of linares you may get the pepsi tournament that could even be good to chess.
The seek for new blood ( people who will sponsor)
Maybe but just maybe that's what players and chess need. |
Feb-16-11 | | lostgalaxy: The g4 variation that Liem uses for the Kings Indian as White's not as safe as it seems. It doesn't really neutralize the King side. Maybe a bit of Petrosian research can help. |
Feb-16-11
 | | HeMateMe: When is this Pepsi tournament going to happen? Will the winners be paid in six-packs? |
Feb-16-11 | | zluria: Le draws and wins the tournament, I guess, since only Cheparinov can theoretically pass him if he wins, and that doesn't look likely (In fact, he seems to be losing to Vitiugov) |
Feb-16-11 | | weisyschwarz: Cheparinov goes down to Vitiugov's Bogo-Indian! |
Feb-16-11 | | Ragh: Congrats to Le Quang Liem for successfully defending the Aeroflot title!! |
Feb-16-11 | | Ezzy: <Ragh: Congrats to Le Quang Liem for successfully defending the Aeroflot title!!> Not so fast :-) - If Khismatullin (Black) wins from this position - (Probably unlikely,) then he would win on the second tiebreak rule. click for larger viewBlack to play. |
Feb-16-11 | | Kinghunt: <Not so fast :-) - If Khismatullin (Black) wins from this position - (Probably unlikely,) then he would win on the second tiebreak rule.> That game is now officially drawn, so congrats to Le! |
Feb-16-11 | | siamesedream: Congratulations to GM Le Quang Liem. |
Feb-16-11 | | jamesmaskell: A draw in Khismatulin game so thats all sorted then. Well done to Le Quang. |
Feb-16-11 | | Ezzy: Khismatullin drew so is out of the running.
So, 3 players finish tied first with 6.5 points. Vitiugov, Le Quang Liem and Tomashevsky. <First tie break rule - The number of games played with Black.> This eliminates Tomashevsky who had 4 black's whilst Vitiugov and Le Quang Liem had 5 black's. <2nd tiebreak rule - The average of the opponents' ratings minus the highest and the lowest rating.> Vitiugov's average rating of opponents is 2638.
Le Quang Liem's average rating of opponents is 2649.
So LE QUANG LIEM is the double Aeroflot open champion. That is absolutely incredible. Such a strong open, and winning it 2 years running is an amazing feat in chess. Congratulations on a MAGNIFICENT performance.
So he's back at Dortmund where he finished 2nd last year. He didn't rely on any chance of being invited back, he created a mesmorising performance once again to claim his Dortmund place on merit!! He is the 'Open' chess king.
Wouldn't surprise me if he went one place better and won Dortmund this year. He's certainly a special talent. |
Feb-16-11 | | Maatalkko: Le Quang Liem is really a success story. He comes from a nation with no chess heritage and doesn't have a trainer. I was not surprised he won Aeroflot last year because he was already performing very strongly as the #1 player on ICC blitz. People knock "online blitz", but look at Nakamura and Liem. If you don't have a trainer and don't live close to any other strong grandmasters, 3 minute ICC games are your only way to practice basic playing skills against the top humans. After conquering ICC, he started winning Open tournaments. Le never got invites, sponsors, anything. He made his own luck. Le is only 19, so he still has great potential to reach 2700 and become a force at major events. |
Feb-16-11 | | lazyknight: Congrat GM Le Quang Liem, you have made chess history by winning super tough open back-to-back! Bravo! |
Feb-16-11 | | fisayo123: <Maatalkko> do you know where i can see the latest ICC blitz rankings? Thanks in advance. |
Feb-16-11 | | Kazzak: Thanks, Ezzy. Excellent update.
Congrats to Le, who has flashes of wild deep positional brilliance at the board. |
Feb-16-11 | | parmetd: Not a bad finish for Gata to end up clear 2nd (3/3 in the final rounds). |
Feb-16-11 | | crazybird: Some quotes from/on Le are in order (after he won 2010 Aeroflot): < Le Quang Liem "I have been playing chess since childhood. Most of the time I work on my own, but I do have a few trainers. About a year ago I began to collaborate with GM Evgeny Bareev, and I believe that my good results arrived mostly thanks to him. Evgeny did a lot to help me to progress, he can identify weaknesses in my game and help me make steps for the overall improvement"Bareev on LQL: "the vietnamese carlsen"
Khalifman on LQL: "very talented, but not a carlsen"> |
Feb-16-11 | | Ezzy: <parmetd: Not a bad finish for Gata to end up clear 2nd> I think joint 4th is a more just assessment. :-) |
Feb-16-11 | | Jim Bartle: Looks to me as if Kamsky ended up tied for 4th, not alone in 2nd. |
Feb-16-11 | | Ezzy: click for larger viewI think Cheparinov must have 'Blacked out' today when he played 23 Ra1-a2?? (See diagram) allowing 23...Nc3 A case of chess blindness which may have cost him the tournament win. Chess can be cruel. |
Feb-16-11 | | magician87: As a Vietnamese, I'm so proud of Quang Liem, and thankful to all the supports for him from this website |
Feb-16-11 | | parmetd: quite right ezzy - joint 2nd. My bad. Clear 2nd score group ;) |
Feb-16-11 | | Maatalkko: <fisayo123> If you are logged in to ICC, you can type the command "best blitz" to see the top 20 blitz players. I don't know how to view this unless you are on the server. I think you can do this as a guest, but most things on ICC require a membership fee. |
Feb-16-11 | | germfreak: <parmetd> I deleted my previous post to edit but you already replied. Anyway, I didn't mean to offend. It just seemed that you had to say clear 2nd group which I seem to have misunderstood so I apologize. That being said, an impressive performance by Liem Quang Le. On the other hand, I was somewhat disappointed with Kamsky's performance but 6/9 is OK in my book. |
Feb-16-11 | | parmetd: I apologize to you as well. I wasn't trying to offend anyone either. I just wanted to congratulate Kamsky on a good finish for what had been a rough start. Anyways, congrats to the true star of the event Le. |
