Oct-21-11  Billy Vaughan: So, any bets on the last move of the Kosintseva game?

I'm betting on <14. ... Bh2+ 1/2-1/2>!

You're gonna have to update Zhao Xue 's biography tomorrow.

tamar: <paap> was a prophet. Zhao Xue played weakly and will lose to Ju Wenjun locking up #1 and #2 for chinese players.

tamar: Bettors looking for a million to one payout on the Kosintseva sisters doing anything other than a short draw were disappointed, as this familiar gamescore appeared.

Oct-21-11  Shams: I can see the Klitchko brothers not fighting each other, but the Kosintseva sisters' relationship would be just fine the next day no matter who were to win a match between them. Isn't drawing all the time slightly unfair to the other players?
Oct-21-11  Agent Bouncy: Organizers share a little of the blame for the continuing Kosintseva-Kosintseva farce. Why do they invite the sisters to play in the same tournament?
Oct-21-11  feitang: What´s wrong with their drawns? It´s fun to watch. They play all games with all they have got, what´s the problem with one short draw?
Oct-21-11  Shams: <Agent Bouncy> Well, they're both rated well over 2500, that might be the issue.
Oct-21-11  Ezzy: It's so refreshing to hear people discussing the Kosintseva sisters draw when Zhao Xue has just won an extremely strong Women's Grand Prix by 2.5 points with 9.5/11 and a rating performance of 2816!!

With a RP of 2974 going into the last round, she finally ran out of steam and lost to her compatriot Ju Wenjun.

I was willing for her not to lose so she would have had a RP in the 2900's, but to say that it was an anticlimax is a bit churlish, It was still a World Class performance, and one that will be remembered for a long time in Women's chess.

Congratulations to Zhao Xue for a magnificent display of chess!!

Oct-21-11  Blunderdome: :/ Too bad Zhao Xue lost, if she had gone 10.5/11 it would have been the best result of year, men's game included.
Oct-21-11  redwhitechess: Kosteniuk +3 (wons) is not bad (Ju Wenjun is +4), but -7 is not that good either.
Oct-21-11  waustad: <dumgai>Yes, I agree.
Oct-21-11  waustad: The Kosintseva sisters may wind up like the Polgar sisters. Judit and Zsuzsa drew all the time early until one of them won a game. After that it was tooth and nail.
Oct-21-11  dumbgai: <feitang: What´s wrong with their drawns? It´s fun to watch. They play all games with all they have got, what´s the problem with one short draw?>

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this Kosintseva sisters thing a mini-version of exactly what Fischer complained about the Soviet players doing? Sure, it's only one game, but it still gives them an unfair advantage over the rest of the field (albeit a small one).

Oct-22-11  Ladolcevita: Congrats to Zhaoxue on her maganificent performance in Nalchik!Simply bravo!
Oct-23-11  gazzawhite: <dumbgai: <feitang: What´s wrong with their drawns? It´s fun to watch. You're exactly right.

Oct-23-11  frogbert: <Isn't drawing all the time slightly unfair to the other players?>

maybe it's even more "unfair" to themselves, shams?

Oct-23-11  frogbert: <if she had gone 10.5/11 it would have been the best result of year, men's game included.>

not really, blunderdome. it just highlights <an obvious flaw> in how performance ratings are calculated for extreme scores.

if you would've said that it would've been "the highest performance rating of the year, men's game included", it would've been undebatable. but again, it would under circumstances have been the best result of the year.

Oct-23-11  Blunderdome: But I didn't say performance rating, I said <best result>, which is sufficiently ambiguous, I think ;) All I'm really claiming is that it would have been the result that impressed me the most.
Oct-23-11  Blunderdome: BTW, Khismatullin had a "3199" performance at the ECC, with 5/5 on Board 6 -- how does that work, do they take the average rating of his opponents and add some arbitrarily large number to it?
Oct-23-11  frogbert: yes, that's what they do. and thereby they get an arbitrarily high "performance".

my rule of thumb: one can basically disregard most performance ratings based on 80% scores or more - the only thing they really tell you is that the player was in a different league compared to his/her opposition in that event. if the event is cat 21+ and a player still scores 80% or more, then asking for stronger opposition is a bit harsh - but even carlsen can't repeat nanjing 2009 on demand (although 70% score in 2010 was a very fine attempt).

<All I'm really claiming is that it would have been the result that impressed me the most.>

that's an entirely subjective scale, obviously. it goes without saying that zhao xue would've been completely incapable of reproing <any> of carlsen's results in 2011 (as an example) - so i guess the "best result" in your case also must be seen as being relative to the person achieving it. alternatively, we're in totally different camps when it comes to judging what "best result" means. :o)

Oct-23-11  Blunderdome: Well, how many points do you think Carlsen would amass if he played Zhao Xao's eleven opponents?
Oct-23-11  frogbert: more relevant: how many points do you think zhao xue would get if she had to start over?

carlsen could repeat (and does repeat) the kind of performances he's had so far this year. "lucky streaks" aren't what impress me - see my rule of thumb again wrt performances.

[carlsen would've had a very hard time finding any kind of motivation to play against this kind of field, and carlsen doesn't generally perform well without being motivated. but if his life depended on it, he would beat the field 10,5/11 - but it's all too hypothethical to be relevant.]
