Atterdag: Love this format. Opening theory is useless, you have to get by with your own pure talent.

Nepomniachtchi leads after four rounds by staggering 4-0. Svidler, Aronian, Nakamura and Caruana bit the dust against him.

In the other end a man named Kasparov has lost all his four games. Must be tough, but I think he enjoys playing with today's elite.

MissScarlett: Less a showdown, more like a beatdown.
Sep-15-22  ndg2: Would have loved to see Korchnoi play with the kids at age 59.
Sep-15-22  ndg2: After 6 rounds, Firouzja and Shak are in the lead, followed by Nepo: https://www.uschesschamps.com/2022-...
Sep-16-22  Zenchess: Why did Kasparov resign his game against Mamedyarov? Black was worse, but even I, who have a bad habit of resigning games prematurely, would not have resigned. Black is worse, but he can still play on. https://live.chessbase.com/en/repla...

At first glance, 23. cxd6 looks like a killer.

23. cxd6 Nxf4 24. dxc7

23. cxd6 Rxd6 24. Nxe6+ fxe6 25. Qxd6+

23. cxd6 Qxd6 24. Qxd6 Rxd6 25. e5 Nxe5 26. f4 Ng6 27. Bxf6 gxf6 28. Nxc6 Rxc6 29. Be4

Atterdag: The chess24 engine suggests 23.-Qb7 after cxd6 with "white is much better" but not "white is winning". The Qf4 has to move, lets say to e3, but then I can't see why 24.-Bxe4 shouldn't follow. Obviously, white is still "much better", but given the short time I'd give it a go with black. Perhaps, after four defeats, Kasparov has too much respect for his opponents?

MissScarlett: <Why did Kasparov resign his game against Mamedyarov?>

Lost on time in the act of playing Ng6. Shak had 7 min 48 s left on the clock.

Atterdag: Thanks, <MissScarlett>. That explains it. Evidently, Kasparov cannot be in the same sharp form & routine as his battle-hardened competitors and that often shows in time consumption.

My third line above was wrong, because I missed 23. cxd6 Qxd6 24. Qxd6+ Rxd6 25. e5? Nxe5 26. f4 <Neg4>, avoiding the skewer tactic. If nothing else, simply 25. Nxc6 with two bishops against two knights but that's only "White is much better."

I didn't spend much time on 23. cxd6 Qb7.<24. Qf3> looks too strong, hitting f6 and c6 as in 24...Bxe4 25. Bxe4 Qxe4 26. Nc6 but ok, maybe that too is only "White is much better," since the chess24 engine must be much stronger than me.

MissScarlett: Games not showing because the FENs have strings like DAda, GAga and HAha, although no CAca.
Sep-16-22  stone free or die: <MissScarlett: Games not showing because the FENs have strings like DAda, GAga and HAha, although no CAca.>

Well, it's 960, and so ordinary FEN is inadequate for the PGN setup - the position of the rooks must be recorded.

It appears that Shredder-FEN is being used:

< For the traditional setup, Shredder-FEN would use AHah instead of KQkq.>

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forsy...

The PGN should almost mark the game as 960, via something like this:

<[Variant "Chess960"]>

Or FischerRandom, or .... (something).

Sep-16-22  stone free or die: FWIW - I think Olga will have trouble handling 960 games. I know SCID does too.

The castling business being the expected hangup.

MissScarlett: PGN viewer <pgn4web> (available from the pulldown menu) to the rescue.

<pgn4web is a javascript chess games viewer for websites, blogs and live broadcasts.

"pgn4web has a clean design, and is easily integrated and configured in wordpress. And yet, below that layer of simplicity, it has enough bells and whistles to allow for more baroque needs and taste. A truly great plugin." GM Tiger Hillarp, using the pgn4web plugin for wordpress on his site chess at the bag of cats, May 2013.>

That's exactly what's happening, I wasn't suppose to create this event. I spoke with <steve> to see if we can get it to work anyways. If you look at the first game:

Svidler vs Nepomniachtchi, 2022

The castling is what's giving us trouble. We are trying to get it to work but if unsuccessful we might have to delete it.

Check It Out: Kasparov finally got a draw in round 9 against Svidler. I get the sense that was meant to happen.

I don't as a kibitzer, exACTly because I have to rely on my own talent to understand the games.

And that doesn't work until well into what would normally be the middle game (maybe around 20 or so) when positions seem reasonably normal and I can apply my small stock of general principles and tactics.

More power to kibitzers who can understand them earlier!
