Aug-11-05 | | jamesmaskell: A tournament for Unzicker's birthday where the birthday boy ends up in last place! What a bummer. |
Aug-11-05 | | refutor: korchnoi was the only player who didn't have the class to draw both his games against the 80 year old unzicker |
Aug-11-05 | | Robin01: Is not Korchnoi is about 80 himself? |
Aug-11-05
 | | WannaBe: Birthday boy was too busy blowing out candles... |
Aug-11-05 | | Robin01: What was the time control on this tournament? |
Aug-11-05
 | | WannaBe: <Robin01: What was the time control...>
As long as the old men don't fall asleep.
I just wish I can REMEMBER how the pieces can move when I reach 80. |
Aug-11-05 | | Robin01: <I just wish I can REMEMBER how the pieces can move when I reach 80> I am with you on that one! |
Aug-11-05 | | ajile: They should have made this a From Gambit tournament. Each game would start F4.E5, FE.D6 etc. Make it alot more interesting. |
Aug-11-05 | | jamesmaskell: Korchnoi I believe is in his early 70s...72? |
Aug-11-05 | | Anatooly Homedepotov: Korchnoi's the second oldest here. He was born March 23rd, 1931, so he's 74 years old. Should have made it a "Geritol Rules" tournament where you can stop your clock to take a nap. |
Aug-11-05
 | | WannaBe: I wonder if 'Depends' sponsored this event. |
Aug-11-05 | | Montreal1666: Check out Korchnoi's "Protective" sunglasses!!!
http://chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp... |
Aug-11-05 | | Koster: <refutor> If karpov didn't beat him it wasn't for lack of trying. |
Aug-11-05 | | Larsker: <Check out Korchnoi's "Protective" sunglasses> Still afraid of evil beams from the Karpov camp? |
Aug-11-05 | | cade: Every game without Korchnoi was a draw. |
Aug-11-05 | | Anatooly Homedepotov: As <refutor> pointed out, Korchnoi should at least have split his 2 points with the birthday boy. This wasn't a serious event. |
Aug-11-05 | | madlydeeply: Korchnoi doesn't draw because Korchnoi is a FIGHTER! Thats why we LOVE HIM! Sheesh. Draw lovers. Kramnik fans probably.
I doubt Unzicker lost any sleep over losing to Korchnoi. I wouldn't. |
Aug-11-05 | | Anatooly Homedepotov: Hey hey them's fightin' words. |
Aug-11-05 | | OneBadDog: There's a story about Korchnoi visiting Taimanov at Taimanov's birthday party. The two of them played a "friendly" game where Korchnoi obtained a very slight endgame advantage. The game ended up lasting several hours before finally being drawn. |
Aug-11-05 | | madlydeeply: There is another story about when Korcnoi met Karpov for the first time. Karpov was just a young whippersnapper. He beat Korchnoi at a few blitz games and then Korchnoi wouldn't let Karpov leave until Korchnoi won at least once. They played all night long. Karpov didn't give in either. So see they are both crazy. And that is why WE love them. Everybody in my brain that is. |
Aug-11-05 | | refutor: yeah but if you take away the 2 games korchnoi won v. the birthday boy it would've been 1.karpov, 2.spassky, 3.korchnoi. |
Aug-11-05 | | sitzkrieg: haha those glasses are ridicolous he is sooooo mad,
thanks for the link montreal |
Aug-11-05 | | madlydeeply: This is from montreal's link:
Finally Wolfgang Unzicker said a few words about his jubilee and the players: “I liked the precision and the fine play of Anatoly Karpov in this event.Viktor once again showed his fighting spirit. There are only a few chess players in the history of chess who have played every game with full power: Pillsbury, Morphy and Lasker. Viktor Korchnoi definitely belongs to this fine group of players.” How about this: All young players must offer the older player a draw. Now there is a sweet tournament! |
Aug-11-05 | | Montreal1666: You don't get to become a "chess legend" unless you are crazy!!! That's the first requirement in FIDE's handbook!
<refutor> good point, but it seems you couldn't expect Korchnoi to understand that. Judging by his sunglasses! He is still in Soviet state of mind and fighting! |
Aug-11-05 | | Knight13: Unzicker turned 80! And Boris Spassky is old. |
