 | | Sneaky: Spotted in a WarCraft gaming chat room:
<deathbringer> if you dont upgrade you will loose
<bigbaron> I no!!
<deathbringer> I'm series! |
Dec-31-05 | | samikd: OK, now that we have finished the discussion about tallest wc, how about the shortest wc ? I think Karpov etc are short, though i dont how what exactly the height is |
Dec-31-05 | | CowardlyKnight: Steinitz aways looked short to me but it's probably because he is puggy. |
Dec-31-05 | | LancelotduLac: Also probably because he was short |

 | | tpstar: It is helpful to gently fix grammatical slips if the poster's original meaning might be misconstrued over syntax. For example, there's a world of difference between "exciting play" and "exiting play." Here's a fun loose/lose thread = Ilivitsky vs Spassky, 1955 |

 | | lostemperor: Believe it or not I have seen a lot of computergames of my nephews where it ends by saying "YOU LOOSE"! I think it is one of the most common mistakes by non native - Englishspeakers. Because of that I looked up the verb lose several times in my dictionary just to make sure again that it is indeed actually written with one O. I thought I knew but just check again. And that for a lostemperor! Oh I also know a Dutch chessgame site where you can play with "FISHERTIMER". Know what I mean? |
Dec-31-05 | | CowardlyKnight: Yea, when does the Wijk aan Zee page open? |
Dec-31-05 | | CowardlyKnight: <lostemperor> Your nephews must have some cheap games. lol |
Dec-31-05 | | danielpi: I could just let this drop, but why give the benefit to those people taking potshots at me over repressed feelings about their grammar school teachers? Thanks though to those who agree that "loose" is annoying. <Angel1234> <Yours was just bad grammar though.> Actually it was a typo. I don't go around saying, "this does not makes sense." Actually, I had originally put "X makes no sense," but decided to change it to, "X does not make sense," but forgot to delete the 's'. Of course, if you want to insist that this was not a typographical error, but that I am not aware of that very rudimentary grammar... well, you're welcome to it. <Funny how it's almost guaranteed that anyone complaining about these things makes the very same mistake in their own post. Talk about hypocrisy.> Well I didn't make the very same mistake. There is quite a difference between a typo and genuine confusion. <yoozum> <Conde> It's a common mistake here to see "loose" instead of "lose." I didn't realize pointing that out would cause such a firestorm. Anyhow, it was <Angel1234> that brought up grammar. I was correcting spelling. <Conde> can you please try once to post something not inflammatory? All you ever seem to do around here is go around looking to pick a fight. And, um, "dont" has an apostrophe (i.e.
"don't")
<Cowardly> <<I'm not trying to pick on anyone here. I don't want anyone to look like an idiot, and this has happened an awful lot lately, so FYI, "Bad spelling is for loosers." :-)> is just plain arrogant, conceited and offensive.> Oh yeah? Which part is offensive? The "I'm not trying to pick on anyone here"? Was that arrogant? How about, "I don't want anyone to look like an idiot"? That's arrogant? Should I want everyone to look like an idiot? Or maybe it's the part with the FYI? "Bad spelling is for 'loosers'"? Oh yeah, that is pretty offensive. Oh, wait, is that a smiley face? Did I write, ":-)"? Well, yes I did. Hm. Well let's take a look at your post.
<I just love that you wrote <does not makes sense> while being a prick to some guy about spelling and grammar. So by your reasoning you look like an idiot you "looser". <^>( - . - )<^>> Wait. Is that conceited, arrogant, and offensive? Then again, that mess at the end might be a smiley face, so... yeah... "peace out," cool guy. Can't tell you how much I love defenders of ignorance. Love 'em. |

Dec-31-05 | | danielpi: <tpstar> Good post on Ilivitsky vs Spassky, 1955. Foreigners may be confused about subtleties of the highly unintuitive English language, but correcting them is more polite then allowing them to repeat the same mistakes. The physically handicapped person who manages to spell everything correctly except "lose" is an unlikely character, indeed. Anyhow, hopefully many people have run across this thread- and whether they appreciated it or not, perhaps there will be fewer instances of this particular mistake in the future. |

Dec-31-05 | | notyetagm: < twinlark: I thought Corus divisions A, B and C were based on ratings. This is certainly true of Corus A, as they're all rated above B and C. Most of Div B is rated above C. But the top three or four in Div C are rated at or higher than some of the Div B players.> Corus is by invitation only. The organizers can invite pretty much anyone they want. But one catch is that the winner of Corus B gets an automatic invitation to next year's Corus A. Karjakin won Corus B 2005 which is why he is playing in Corus A 2006. And similarly, the winner of Corus C gets an automatic invitation to next year's Corus B. |
Dec-31-05 | | twinlark: <notyetagm> Thanks. |

Jan-01-06 | | notyetagm: You're welcome, <twinlark>. |
Jan-01-06 | | Angel1234: <danielpi: I could just let this drop, but why give the benefit to those people taking potshots at me over repressed feelings about their grammar school teachers?> Just stop making an ass of yourself when you're the one being corrected. Nobody's saying people should type loose instead of lose. |

 | | tpstar: <Angel1234> Happy New Year! What was your favorite game from the Russian SuperFinal? |
Jan-01-06 | | notyetagm: <tpstar> I really liked Bareev's victory over Morozevich. And Bareev's combination to defeat Kramnik was spectacular. |
Jan-01-06 | | csmath: I think over the quality of games Svidler's win over Kramnik and Morozevich's win over Khalifman were just splendidly well conducted from the beginning to the end. They both look dominating and effortless even though the opponents did not make blunders. Both were also nice textbook examples of crushing the opponent that plays passive defence. Morozevich's execution of Khalifman is also a very nice and methodical ending play. My votes:
1. Morozevich-Khalifman
2. Svidler-Kramnik
Jan-01-06 | | csmath: Moro probably played the best chess. He should have won the game against Zvjaginsev and had he woke up on time against Jakovenko, he might have been the winner of the tournament. |
Jan-01-06 | | Angel1234: <tpstar>
Likewise.
I liked how Morozevich outplayed Khalifman best. |
Jan-01-06 | | yoozum: Moro's wins were very good, but I was extremely impressed with Bareev's combination that finished Kramnik. So I'd have to vote for Kramnik-Bareev. |
Jan-01-06 | | twinlark: Bareev-Svidler |
Jan-01-06 | | yoozum: Kramnik-Volkov was also quite good. |
Jan-02-06 | | VishyFan: <cu8sfan> I'm a bit late to the party....., if u can refer to page 82/83, I've posted my round 11 predictions there, it seems to me that u haven't counted them......, i've got 4/6 for that round....., can u please update the same..... |

 | | cu8sfan: <VishyFan> Thanks for your message. I just checked my records. I DID count your results, you went 4-6 in the last round for a total of 32 points. But for some reasons the counter for the number of rounds participated in didn't add one for a total of 11. Sorry about that. |
