| Aug-22-10 | | DeepFriedLiver: <turbo> Not quite. I think Chessbomb put the moves up as fast as they could get them, but there appeared to be some delay. The first 12 moves were put up nearly simultaneously. If FICS is broadcasting, Babaschess is probably a better way to watch blitz. |

| Aug-22-10 | | YouRang: Congrats to Nakamura, but it is a bit of a pity that Giri lost it this way. As far as the tournament was concerned, I see Giri as the MVP of the Youth team. He carried the team during some critical rounds and only lost in the last round when it practically didn't matter (aside from the Amber issue). Excellent performance by Gelfand for the Experience team. |

Naka is the best blitz player on the planet. On second thought maybe knocking your opponent out in the early rounds is sorta merciful? I really enjoyed this tournament over all. (a) Gelfand is still capable of showing flashes of his 90’s brilliance. I think, in the forthcoming Candidates Matches, he can give the other contenders a run for their money.
(b) Giri is an outstanding talent, although being comparatively young, he still has to learn how not to fold during crunch time. But all in all, his play shows great promise, really world-class.
(c) Nakamura is in a league of his own when it comes to speed chess. I still remember that one time he beat the daylights out of Grischuk in an internet blitz match (considering that at that time, Grischuk sported the highest blitz rating on the internet).
(d) Ljubojevic can still play, despite being severely handicapped by lack of cutting-edge theory. It only shows that the former star of the Yugoslavian chess firmament really has enormous talent. I still remember that in 1985 he made the startling remark, “At present I consider Kasparov and Karpov to be better players than I am. But I don’t think anyone else in the world is better than I am, aside from these two.” Now, I think it was not a boast. |

I didn't realize that Aronian was ill for the entire fortnight... Of course, it's not the only time he's had a bad tournament result. In any case, Gelfand has been trading classical wins with him for years now, and their personal score (classical) seems to be 5-5. At times Aronian has seemed to be the best rapid player in the world, but Gelfand beat him in Leon this year. Of all the first round candidate matches, that one seems to be the closest "on paper," despite the rating gap. I feel Aronian is a slight favorite but I won't be surprised at all if Gelfand manages to eliminate him. |

Filipino's have produced very dominant Boxing and Billiards champions recently, maybe the optimism is carrying over? In contrast Fabiano has relocated several times. I'm not even sure where he lives now, although he was born in the US and is of Italian heritage so maybe less have latched on to him. Likewise Anish is of Nepalese and Russian heritage and now represents the Netherlands who already had a chess hero of sorts. I think in Giri's case that will change as he makes his way towards the top and he starts to become recognized for his immense talent. I don't think So will attain the same level, he is already way to ready to escape with a draw. His fans will diminish somewhat and likely be mostly motivated by nationalism while Giri will gain international appeal. I really think his commentary is awsome and he is very likable to boot. Caruana is more of a question mark to me, how far he will go is slightly less clear but all these guys will find a home in the 2700's which in my opinion is do to elo inflation as much as improved chess and will become crowded making 2750's the new mark. Thats my take anyway. |
