eternaloptimist: <beatgiant> Thx for the trivia Q & A! I learned some things. I wasn't aware of all of the teams that were affiliated w/ the UK. I was already familiar w/ the American territories since I'm American. I see u r American also. China is my favorite foreign country on your list & I really like Hong Kong! The ppl & food over there are great! I did already know that the Faroe Islands are part of the Kingdom of Denmark but I didn't know it until the other day. I played over 1 of Andreasen's (2200+ fide rating) games & read his profile. Then I googled "Faroe Islands" to read about it. This web page does an excellent job of explaining the current situation w/ the islands that used to be in the Netherlands Antilles.: https://www.government.nl/topics/ca... Also I noticed that Aruba used to be in the NA but they decided to have their own team instead of joining the NA team.

beatgiant: <eternaloptimist> Good point about Aruba. So Netherlands had three teams, putting it in a tie for third with Azerbaijian for most number of teams.
Sep-20-16  schweigzwang: Definitely the first tiebreak should be the dilution factor, that is, how many "teams" each "country" had.

beatgiant: <schweigzwang><how many "teams" each "country" had>

Imagine the political dilemmas: does Chinese Taipei count toward China, thereby upholding the "One China" principle at a cost of a worse tiebreak?

And depending on how Serbia and Kosovo* are counted, one or the other team might walk out in protest.

Sep-21-16  Amulet: Finally opinions about the just concluded 2016 World Chess Olympiad has been exhausted.

Chess people, see you in the next World Chess Olympiad!

End of thread.

eternaloptimist: <beatgiant> Thx! Yes the Netherlands had 3 teams instead of 2. Btw what r some of your favorite games from this Olympiad? (Anybody can reply to this question, not just <beatgiant>.)

beatgiant: <eternaloptimist> The first one that came to my mind is Kramnik vs B Adhiban, 2016
Sep-22-16  Jambow: Or those complaining about the off topic discussion or those only tangentially so could post something interesting on topic...

Alright so the WC chess match looks to be a yawner, maybe it will get more exciting as the date approaches.

HeMateMe: why do you think it's a yawner?
Sep-22-16  starry2013: I don't know how many times it has to be said, but chess federations competed not 'countries' as people put it. I know it's called an Olympiad but that's a misnomer.

Sally Simpson: Am I reading this right starry203,

If me and my gang of slobs from Sandy Bells pub in the heart of Edinburgh split from the Scottish Federation call ourselves the Sandy Bells Chess federation, pay the FIDE fees we can play at the next Olympiad.

Great! I'm on it. Batumi here we come.

HeMateMe: Why don't you sponsor your own Edinburgh Party too, as an offset to the Bermuda party? You could offer haggis, real beer, maybe free heroin? A screening of Trainspotting, hand out free guides to "The Twenty-something Guide to Being a Slacker" and more!

This one.

J Torres Santiago vs Tito Kahn, 2016

Sep-24-16  cro777: Attention deficit syndrome – how to treat it?

"The gold medal team got little attention in the national media and chess continues to struggle for attention. All we got was a debate on whether the U.S. team imported their talent or not. No welcoming party at the airport, no celebration by the chess community and of course, the excitement has subsided already." (Daaim Shabazz)

Is the lack of readiness of the chess community to try anything different from the current model one of the causes? Will a "big idea in a sport with small aims" also end next month?

Sweet. Lets thank Carlsen for killing chess with his immature <for sale> tweet.

One good reason why Wesley will snatch the crown and dump him where he truly belong. The fish tank. LOL.

<While the first two tournaments attracted 400+ players, the numbers were far lower than anticipated. The MC concept added an element of class with nice touches.>

The entry fee was $1000 and the numbers were lower than anticipated?

eternaloptimist: <Sally Simpson> Thx for the link to that game! U don't see a whole lot of chess players play the Smith-Morra so it was interesting to play over that game. Santiago developed his pieces quickly, got an attack rolling & made Kahn pay for neglecting quick development of his pieces. Also your reply to <starry2013> is quite humorous.

<beatgiant> Thx for the link to the Kramnik game! I love playing over his games b/c I love games w/ deep strategical plans in them. He did a great job of getting Adhiban into a defensive/passive position, kept the pressure on him & won a piece off a tactic based off a pin & covering the key square h7 w/ his ♗. It's very possible that this could be his best game of the Olympiad! Although I haven't played over all of his games. I've read kibitzes from 3 or so kibitzers that say Kramnik isn't as good as he used to be but he has a 2800+ rating & he's ranked 4th in the world!

As for me, I think these games show great technique by the winners!: Caruana vs Eljanov, 2016 I Nepomniachtchi vs W So, 2016 This game was a very important & interesting game & helped determine the outcome of the Olympiad. The USA won gold b/c of this game by winning the tiebreak!: M Bluebaum vs T Seeman, 2016

When the prize fund is 1 million $ (as suggests the tournament name), if we don't take into account the sponsors, 1000 participants paying $1000 would be needed to make sure the organizer doesn't lose money. This doesn't take care of the fact that the organizers have to pay for a venue and other such organisations' expenses. So 400+ entries seems not to be enough indeed.

A part of the Antilles still belongs to Holland: the Carribean Antilles.

beatgiant: <WorstPlayerEver> Netherlands Antilles top boards were Wim Blijstra and Ursus van Bemmelen.

Do you not agree that, to play on the Netherlands Antilles team in the Olympiad, a person needs to reside in one of the Netherlands' Carribean possessions?

Sep-27-16  WorstPlayerEver: <beatgigant>

Of course, but I think because we speak of such a tiny population they somehow left the NA be in chess.

beatgiant: <WorstPlayerEver> <Lesser Antilles> (your link above) and <Netherlands Antilles> are not exactly the same thing.

Sep-27-16  WorstPlayerEver: <beatgigant>

I thought it was obvious: the 'Lesser' page shows what nationalities each member have. Frankly, as a Dutchman, I never heard of either the 'Carribean Antilles' or 'Lesser Antilles' before I started googling.

There is not any Olympiad team for <Lesser Antilles>, but there are separate Olympiad teams for <Barbados>, <Netherlands Antilles> and <US Virgin Islands>, and I assume the corresponding residence requirements apply to members of these teams.

So my original statement stands: the <Netherlands Antilles> team is for people residing in possessions of the Netherlands. Are you saying something different?

Sep-27-16  WorstPlayerEver: <beatgigant>
No, but I wonder who would call themselves 'Lesser Carribeans.' Seems to make no sense. Crazy world, isn't it?
