The Eurasian Blitz Chess Cup of the President of Kazakhstan was held in Almaty on June 18 and June 19, 2016. It was a Swiss System open with 22 rounds (11 double-rounds); players met the same opponent with both colors in each double-round. The time control was 3 minutes per player with a 2-second increment per move. The first seven double-rounds were played on June 18; Shakhriyar Mamedyarov topped the field on the first day with 11.5/14. Baadur Jobava scored four wins and one draw (including a double win against Mamedyarov) in the next five rounds, and led by a point and a half with three rounds to play; he then lost to Sergey Karjakin in round 20 and top seed Ian Nepomniachtchi in round 21, giving Nepomniachtchi a half-point lead before the final round. Farrukh Amonatov closed with four consecutive wins, while Nepomniachtchi drew his last game; both Amonatov and Nepomniachtchi finished on 16.0/22, but Amonatov had 15 wins to Nepomniachtchi's 13 and won the tournament on the second tie-break criterion. Jobava placed third half a point behind the top two, edging fourth-placed Vladislav Artemiev on performance rating. Tie-break criteria: 1. head-to-head-score; 2. most wins; 3. performance rating; 4.
