Dionysius1: I'm surprised all the participants are from the UK.Hasting's tradition is foreign plus a few UK. I doubt if the prize fund being small would discourage overseas participants: it's just online. So why no foreign competitors?

According to the official regulations, no covid is allowed in this tourney.

I do not like that time control. It's the +10s that I dislike. It completely takes away the dramatic time-trouble dimension of chess.

I think a better control is 20m+3s.

Korora: I actually misread that as "Captain Hastings" at first. You know, as in Hercule Poirot's friend.

My first thought when watching any Poirot episode is that Hastings did it. <SPOILER ALERT> it never is him, it is always some other posh freak.

Which brings me to the winner of this years tournament: it was won by David "<I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness>" Howell.

He won by 1½ points over Luke McShane, who was a point ahead of Gawain Jones. Howell's TPR was 2785.

The Howell-McShane game was a cracker!

Well, Agatha Christie did invent the narrator-did-it reveal (I will not identify the story, for the sake of those who haven't read it yet; no, Hastings wasn't the narrator).

<The Howell-McShane game was a cracker!>

Well, maybe it'll be up when I get back from work this afternoon.

Dionysius1: <watwinc: COVID?>. Eh? The tournament is being held entirely online - there is no physical proximity between the contestants: they are in their own homes with input entirely through their laptops/computers/mobiles etc. How can COVID affect who participates when it's online, for goodness sake?

Korora: <How can COVID affect who participates when it's online, for goodness sake?> It's a different sort of virus you have to watch out for online, and I'm sure these chess tournaments get well-guarded against malware.
Jan-12-21  Pedro Fernandez: <Tabanus> First!ñ

Well, well, well. Given that you were my first friend here (2007), and given that <Off Ramp> loves me, he has had the courtesy to concede his chair for you.

Jan-12-21  Pedro Fernandez: Dear <korora>, what does have to do an alopatic virus vs a binary one?

Yes, you're responding, not asking.

PS. Or maybe I didn't understand the question. (My horrible English!)

It's called quantum tunneling. No matter how strong of a barrier you put up, some of those pesky particles will get through with a probability > 0.

offramp: When I first looked at this tournament's lineup it looked like every strong English player was taking part.

That's true, it is a strong line up <15 to 20 years ago!>.

Matthew J Wadsworth is 20, but the next youngest player is 30 (Howell, the winner).

Discounting the IM Wadsworth, the average age of the other 11 players was 48.5.

That's like a seniors tournament. No wonder they all stayed at home, they were CEV.

Is it possible that English chess really is in a bad way? Where are the young players?

Feb-03-21  Rumor: It is rather striking, though not entirely surprising, that the one youngster Matthew Wadsworth massively outperformed his ELO in this quick play format.

perfidious: It should be noted that Wadsworth's quick rating, is, of course, far below that in classical.
