The 2021 Caplin Hastings All-Play-All was a 12-player single round-robin played on 9-10 January 2021, replacing the 96th Hastings International Chess Congress. Due to the Corona virus pandemic it was held online at https://home.tornelo.com/. Main sponsor: Caplin Systems. Time control: 15 minutes for the whole game, with 10 seconds added per move from move 1. If a tie for first place between two players there would be an Armageddon playoff game (5 vs 4 minutes). If a tie between three or more players the top two to play the Armageddon game would be decided by 1) Direct encounter, 2) Greater number of victories. 3) Sonneborn-Berger score, 4) Koya score. Rounds 1 (Saturday) and 7 (Sunday) kicked off at 1 pm local time. First prize: £1200. Tournament organizer: Marc Bryant. Chief arbiter: Matthew Carr. Which brings me to the winner of this years tournament: it was won by David "<I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness>" Howell. He won by 1½ points over Luke McShane, who was a point ahead of Gawain Jones. Howell's TPR was 2785. The Howell-McShane game was a cracker! |

| | offramp: When I first looked at this tournament's lineup it looked like every strong English player was taking part. That's true, it is a strong line up <15 to 20 years ago!>. Matthew J Wadsworth is 20, but the next youngest player is 30 (Howell, the winner). Discounting the IM Wadsworth, the average age of the other 11 players was 48.5. That's like a seniors tournament. No wonder they all stayed at home, they were CEV. Is it possible that English chess really is in a bad way? Where are the young players? |
