Laszlo Szabo. The turning point came in round five. The three GMs (Gligoric, Bondarevsky and Szabo) were tied for first with 3 points, while IM Sliwa was just behind with 2.5. The round saw Bondarevsky drawn by tail-ender Cafferty and Szabo suffer defeat at the hands of Clarke, while Gligoric started a little three-game winning streak at the expense of Sliwa. <In the annual Hastings Christmas Congress, the contestants for the Premier are likely to be Barden, Cafferty. Clarke, and Lloyd (K.W.) (England), Aaron (India), Cholmov, and Bondarevski (U.S.S.R.), Szabo (Hungary), Gligoric (Yugoslavia), and Sliwa (Poland).> Birmingham Daily Post, 29 Dec. 1960, p. 11:
<After five hours play and 39 moves. Bernard Cafferty, a Birmingham schoolmaster, lost his Premier tournament game to A. Y. Green, of London. Cafferty, expecting to meet Kholmov, was told 24 hours before that Bronstein was coming instead. Bronstein, too, failed to arrive and the Londoner, Green, volunteered to fill the breach at the last moment. Cafferty lost to Green whom he would usually beat.> |

That was normal at Hastings over many decades, just the one qualfying place for the winner of the Premier Reserves Major (later renamed the Challengers). |

| | perfidious: From the accounts cited by <Tabanus>, it appears there was more uncertainty than usual surrounding the lineup; my recollection is that in those days, one could invite Soviet players and often have someone turn up other than those originally slated to play. |
