Grand Prix Jerusalem (2019)

The FIDE Jerusalem Grand Prix took place in Jerusalem, Israel from December 11-22 2019. The 16-player knockout was the 4th and last leg of the 21-player Grand Prix series that determined two places in the World Championship Candidates (2020) tournament. Players competed in three of the four tournaments, which each had a 130,000 euro prize fund, with 24,000 euros for 1st place. There were also from 1 (quarterfinal loser) to 8 (winner) Grand Prix points available, plus an additional point for each match win without tiebreaks. The overall series prize fund was 280,000, with 50,000 for 1st place. Each round consisted of two games of classical chess, with a time control of 90 minutes/40 moves + 30 min to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment from move 1. If the match was tied, two 25+10 rapid games were played. If still tied, there were two 10+10 games, then if still tied, two 5+3. Finally (if necessary) a single Armageddon game was played, where White had 5 minutes to Black’s 4 (with a 2-second increment from move 61) but Black won the match with a draw. Chief arbiter: Almog Burstein.

Ian Nepomniachtchi beat Wei Yi in the final and collected 10 Grand Prix points.

Diademas: As a true renaissance man, Stephen Fry has turned his attention to a vast variety of subjects. Including chess.

Such swine specialize in second-guessing the motives of those who are brave enough to commit to the risk of making fools of themselves in public and they are a blight on the face of the earth.’>

AylerKupp: <Clemens Scheitz> You're right. Apparently reading <tuttifruitty>'s post must have impaired my memory even more than I thought.
Jan-09-20  Sokrates: <Clemens> - forgot to add that Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie are high on my favourite list. Besides their series together, I have particularly enjoyed Fry's iconic quiz show and Laurie's Dr House. The latter raising this actor to stellar performances.

  moronovich: Hi <Sokrates> !

I suppose you have seen (the English title is something like the Night Watcher) "Natportien" (in Danish) with Hugh Laurie !? Instructed by Susanne Bier.It is a series, in 6 chapters.

Let me put it this way:You are very lucky if you have not !:) It is tremendous.

Jan-09-20  Count Wedgemore: I haven't seen the Night Watcher. After <moro>'s glowing review I will now, of course :=

Don't know if you guys are fans of P.G. Wodehouse, but Fry and Laurie both played in a UK television series based on Wodehouse's "Jeeves" stories: 'Jeeves and Wooster' in the 90s. It's brilliant.

moronovich: Sorry <Count>.Haven´t seen them, but if they pass my way, they shall have a shot.

And please, let me know what you think of the Night Watcher!?

Jan-09-20  Count Wedgemore: <moronovich> I just looked for the Night Watcher on Amazon to see if they sold the series on DVD or Blue-Ray, but can't find it.

moronovich: Perhaps I made a bummer. The title is the
"Night Manager".Sorry if it caused you any disturbances. Wife says it perhaps is on Netflix.
Jan-09-20  Count Wedgemore: <moronovich> Thanks! Found it immediately now that I had the right title. Looks like it's on Netflix as well. Then I can just watch it there instead of buying it. Say thanks to your wife from me!

Hadn't even heard about this.

Looks like it's a BBC production. Available in Norway on TV2 Sumo. https://sumo.tv2.no/c-more/c-more-s...

Jan-09-20  rogge: Highly recommended👌👍
Jan-09-20  Sokrates: Been away a few hours and you guys have spit out posts like a machine gun.

I have just made a search on Netflix, but, alas, the Night Manager had gone to sleep somewhere else. Sorry, <moro>.

<Count> - I have seen Jeeves and Wooster, albeit many years ago. Also read Woodhouse with great pleasure when I was young (under the Punic Wars).

And, as a nod to you and <Diademas>, the eternal Fleksnes, who appeared at a moment in history, when Danes thought humour didn't exist in your great country! :-))

The Black Adder series was mentioned. 'Black Adder Goes Forth' (the one set in WWI).

Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, Rowan Atkinson and (sir) Tony Robinson was one of the best things on T.V.

Fry's portrayal of the General Haig type character was brilliant. They all were.

I'm into Hancock, Sgt Bilko and Laurel and Hardy. I have the full sets of everything they did. Marvelous stuff, never tire of watching any of it.

  Sally Simpson: Hi Diademas,

Tony Robinson also does a lot of other stuff off screen as well.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_...

Laurie and Atkinson are both CBE's.

Stephen Fry, an OBE or MBE or even a Knighthood cannot be far off - unless he has been offered one and refused it.

Just googled people who refused awards.

L.S.Lowry, (matchstick man artist) refused an OBE, an MBE and a Knighthood holds the record for the most refusals.

Also noted Leonard Barden declined his OBE which swings it rather deftly back to chess. (it's a personal choice, quite a lot of people say 'no thank you')

Jan-10-20  Count Wedgemore: Another famous Briton to refuse a knighthood was Stephen Hawking.

Diademas: <Sally Simpson> I know Tony Robinson has taken a special interest in archeology, and both the "Time Team" and "The Worst Jobs in History" series are well worth watching. My comment were half in jest.

I read somewhere that Stephen Fry could not be knighted, since he was convicted for credit card fraud in his teens. I know about the conviction, but I don't know if that disqualifies him.

  Sally Simpson: Hi Diademas,

I thought there was a joke in there somewhere but you can never be sure here.

I Googled around a bit. Seems a poll was run last year and Fry and J.K. Rowling were voted top of the list to get awards.

Also read something about him knocking a knighthood back but no further details.

(J.K. wrote some of her first Harry Potter in Sandy Bells which is a few doors away from the cafe which has advertised the fact she was there writing and shamefully cash in every tourists season.

I would be in the corner at Bells playing all comers at chess and this woman kept looking at me, a weird looking lad with round spectacles playing chess and being noisy. She started making notes...chess was in the first Harry Potter...I should ask for royalties.)

Started my new chess magazine 'Chess Eye' which exposes all the skullduggery that goes in Chess. (keep your 'eye' on Spassky and Lothar Schmid.)

Jan-12-20  Sokrates: Thanks for the link to those who've refused knighthood. It pleases me to see that so many greats are on the list (Harold Pinter, yes!). Recently, this was discussed in Denmark, where national conservatives can't fathom that social democrat ministers always have refused them.
