| Grand Prix Jerusalem (2019) |

The FIDE Jerusalem Grand Prix took place in Jerusalem, Israel from December 11-22 2019. The 16-player knockout was the 4th and last leg of the 21-player Grand Prix series that determined two places in the World Championship Candidates (2020) tournament. Players competed in three of the four tournaments, which each had a 130,000 euro prize fund, with 24,000 euros for 1st place. There were also from 1 (quarterfinal loser) to 8 (winner) Grand Prix points available, plus an additional point for each match win without tiebreaks. The overall series prize fund was 280,000, with 50,000 for 1st place. Each round consisted of two games of classical chess, with a time control of 90 minutes/40 moves + 30 min to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment from move 1. If the match was tied, two 25+10 rapid games were played. If still tied, there were two 10+10 games, then if still tied, two 5+3. Finally (if necessary) a single Armageddon game was played, where White had 5 minutes to Black’s 4 (with a 2-second increment from move 61) but Black won the match with a draw. Chief arbiter: Almog Burstein. Ian Nepomniachtchi beat Wei Yi in the final and collected 10 Grand Prix points. The Black Adder series was mentioned. 'Black Adder Goes Forth' (the one set in WWI). Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, Rowan Atkinson and (sir) Tony Robinson was one of the best things on T.V. Fry's portrayal of the General Haig type character was brilliant. They all were. I'm into Hancock, Sgt Bilko and Laurel and Hardy. I have the full sets of everything they did. Marvelous stuff, never tire of watching any of it. |

Laurie and Atkinson are both CBE's.
Stephen Fry, an OBE or MBE or even a Knighthood cannot be far off - unless he has been offered one and refused it. Just googled people who refused awards.
L.S.Lowry, (matchstick man artist) refused an OBE, an MBE and a Knighthood holds the record for the most refusals. I know Tony Robinson has taken a special interest in archeology, and both the "Time Team" and "The Worst Jobs in History" series are well worth watching. My comment were half in jest. I read somewhere that Stephen Fry could not be knighted, since he was convicted for credit card fraud in his teens. I know about the conviction, but I don't know if that disqualifies him. |

I thought there was a joke in there somewhere but you can never be sure here. I Googled around a bit. Seems a poll was run last year and Fry and J.K. Rowling were voted top of the list to get awards. Also read something about him knocking a knighthood back but no further details. (J.K. wrote some of her first Harry Potter in Sandy Bells which is a few doors away from the cafe which has advertised the fact she was there writing and shamefully cash in every tourists season. I would be in the corner at Bells playing all comers at chess and this woman kept looking at me, a weird looking lad with round spectacles playing chess and being noisy. She started making notes...chess was in the first Harry Potter...I should ask for royalties.) Started my new chess magazine 'Chess Eye' which exposes all the skullduggery that goes in Chess.
