European Team Championship (1997)

The 11th European Team Championship was contested between 34 national teams in the Histria hotel in Punta Verudela, Pula, Croatia from 6-14 May 1997. It was a 9-round Swiss system tournament organized by the Croatian Chess Federation and the European Chess Union. It was also the first European Team Championship where the participating countries had to pay the cost of accommodation for their teams. Time control: 120 minutes for the first 40 moves followed by 60 additional minutes for the next 20 moves, and no more extra time except 30 seconds added per move from move 61. Tournament director: Damir Medak. Chief arbiter: Geurt Gijssen. Number of games played: 612.

England (Short, Adams, Speelman, Sadler, Hodgson) won with 22.5/36 game points, ahead of Russia (2nd on Buchholz tiebreak, 22.5/36) and Armenia (22/36). The event was followed by Pula Open (1997) which started on 16 May.

  Tabanus: Sweden's team captain Bjorn Ansner wrote in Tidskrift för Schack 1997 no. 5 page 279 that the championship was 9 rounds without any rest day. TWIC 5 May https://theweekinchess.com/html/twi... says that the event will start on 6 May. Consequently, the dates here are 6-14 May.
