Tilburg Fontys (1996) |
"Two improbable winners tied for first place in the elite Fontys International Tournament in Tilburg, the Netherlands, in late October: Boris Gelfand of Belarus and Jeroen Piket of the host country. Each scored 7-4 and got a prize of $11,810. Piket was not expected to win because he was the second-lowest ranked player in the event. And Gelfand was a last-minute substitute for Vladimir Kramnik, who had suddenly given up his place." (Robert Byrne in New York Times) This was the 19th Tilburg tournament and the first held under Fontys sponsorship. It was a Category XVI event (Elo average 2648). Twelve grandmasters, many of them from the emerging generation of players, participated in the round robin event. Tilburg, the Netherlands, 11-23 October 1996 Age Elo* 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 1 2
