Tilburg Fontys (1997) |
"What started as an easy trip to victory for Garry Kasparov ... became tough, and he had to share first place with his Russian compatriots Peter Svidler and Vladimir Kramnik. Kasparov roared off to a 5½-½ lead, but Svidler nailed him in the seventh round for his only loss of the event. All three finished with 8-3 scores and received a prize of $8,750." (Robert Byrne in New York Times) This was the 20th Tilburg tournament and the second held under Fontys sponsorship. It was a Category XVII event (Elo average 2667). Eleven GMs and one IM, most of them from the new generation of players, participated in the round robin event. Time control: 2 hours for the first 40 moves, 3 hours for the first 60 moves, and 3½ hours for the whole game. The tournament was a major landmark for Kramnik and Svidler as they tied with Kasparov for first place. Tilburg, the Netherlands, 27 September - 9 October 1997 Age Elo* 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 1 2

Mar-22-23
 | | FSR: A rough tournament for the World Junior Champion, Tal Shaked, who was rated 125 points below the second lowest rated player. Two years later, after losing in the second round of the FIDE World Championship Knockout Tournament (1999) to Kiril Georgiev, he left chess for the presumably more lucrative world of Google. His match against Georgiev included the immortally punned "Mr. Georgiev, Wear Down this Tal!" K Georgiev vs Shaked, 1999, the late, great <Phony Benoni>'s masterpiece. |

Apr-30-24 | | mk volkov: <A rough tournament for the World Junior Champion, Tal Shaked> "Kramnik easily defeated him with Black and joked: "For me, now the phrase "Play like Tal" has different sense". We knew that in this tournament the winner will be the player, who destroys the tail more harsh than the others." (Kasparov. "My Chess Way III. Part 2. On a second peak") |
