Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Tilburg Fontys (1998)

"In addition to the 12 participants, several other grandmasters were present in Tilburg: Gennadi Sosonko (as guest of honor), Elizbar Ubilava (Anand's regular colleague), Roberto Cifuentes (Van Wely's second), Hans Ree (journalist). In addition to them, John van der Wiel, Jan Timman and Robert Huebner were present as commentators, and Predrag Nikolic, Ivan Sokolov and Ljubomir Ljubojevic as observers. Interesting news is that the Fontys company guaranteed the organization of the tournament for three years. This has now expired. The tournament director, Barbara Schol, however, seemed optimistic, considering a 95 percent chance that a major tournament will be organized in Tilburg next year. "Maybe with a different name and in a different form," she said. Until now, Karpov, Kasparov and Korchnoi were our "professors." Now this role has been eliminated. "We may organize a two-round competition with 8 participants in 1999, but for now it all depends on the sponsors."" (Sakkélet, Google transl.)

This was the 21st Tilburg tournament and the third and last held under Fontys sponsorship. It was a Category XVIII event (Elo average 2680). Twelve GMs, all except Korchnoi from the new generation of players, participated in the round robin event. All rounds started at 1:30 pm. Time control: 2 hours for the first 40 moves, 3 hours for the first 60 moves, and 3½ hours for the whole game.
