Carlsen thus earned his first of three GM norms here. The Aeroflot Open (2004) awarded him the second norm, and he achieved his final norm at the Dubai Open (2004) by the end of April. Along with many other news sources, the Washington Post featured Carlsen's Round 12 mating attack in Carlsen vs S Ernst, 2004. The Dutchman Sipke Ernst placed second overall, followed by Jan Smeets in third place.
