Oct-15-11  visayanbraindoctor: How is the Romanian Superliga related to the German Schachbundesliga?

Same sponsors? Or completely different tournaments?

Oct-16-11  virginmind: no connection, different tournaments and sponsors. it's true that nisipeanu usually plays in bundesliga for baden-baden, but that's all.
Oct-16-11  visayanbraindoctor: <virginmind> Thanks. I get confused by all these team tournaments in Europe; I used to think some of them were part of the same series with the same sponsors.
Oct-16-11  dx9293: It seems like the USA is the only major chess country that doesn't have a National Team Championship (the USCL is nice, but that doesn't count).
Oct-16-11  Mudphudder: Not sure if I even would consider the USA a "major chess country". LOL...I mean, we do have some good players coming out of our country but by the sheer numbers of grandmasters coming out of eastern europe we are way behind.
Oct-16-11  I play the Fred: <Not sure if I even would consider the USA a "major chess country". LOL...I mean, we do have some good players coming out of our country but by the sheer numbers of grandmasters coming out of eastern europe we are way behind.>

Yeah, but eastern Europe means several countries, not one. How does the US stack up against individual countries?

Oct-17-11  dx9293: Look at the Olympiad and World Team Championship results. The US is definitely one of the ten best chess countries.
Oct-17-11  Everett: <Yeah, but eastern Europe means several countries, not one.>

It may be more relevant to look at this through the lens of "per capita"

I am curious how well do these guys get paid for this, and can they survive doing leagues around the world... I'm guessing not.

Oct-18-11  dx9293: 2600+ GMs get paid several hundred USD for each game they play.

I have no idea what 2700 players and guys like Anand and Carlsen get.

Jan-11-12  notyetagm: OH!!!

YESSS!!!!!!!

My fav tournament of the year.

Jan-11-12  solskytz: lols... the link is misleading... I'm sure the guy was referring to Tata Steel.

After Nakamura's performance last year I'm also quite curious to watch this tourney

Jan-11-12  achieve: Very neat ploy again by <chessgames>, but solskytz, alert as ever, did not fall for it.
Jan-11-12  chessexp: ????? This is TaTa 2012????

Bishoprick: Tata Steel 2012 already played, and only with Romanians?

Bishoprick: As to how strong a chess country the US is, if Olympiads are to be believed, we are right in there with another big country, Israel, with their strongest player (Gelfand) about to meet World Champion Anand.
