Groningen Open-A (2011) The Groningen Chess Festival took place 21st-30th December 2011. Alexander Kovchan edged out Robert Hess on tie-break after both scored 7/9. They were half a point clear of Sergei Tiviakov and Yaroslav Zherebukh. Dec-26-11    zluria: I'm watching the game Tiviakov-Zerebukh now. Yaro seems to have misplayed the opening a little bit. Tivvy looks better to me right now (after 20 moves). Of course, there are no comp evals so I have to trust my brain, a notoriously fickle instrument. Dec-26-11    waustad: Zherebukh leads after 5 rounds with 4.5. There is a 6 way tie going into the final round at 4, including Robert Hess and Sergei Tiviakov. Evgeny Romanov is the only 2600+ player not in the 4+ groups. Well, Germany has a lot of immigrants (don't we all?), also from Scandinavia, which is where I assume the name "Hagen" originates.... Not sure <why> I assume that, though, and I'm no expert, just that I know of the Icecream mogol Hägen-Dasz, and the norwegian cyclist Boasson Hagen... It's pretty certain their progress is being followed by a lot of chess fans, as the chess world is always eagerly on the lookout for potential rising stars. Dec-27-11    achieve: Hess, age 20 and weighing in at 200 pounds, can hardly be considered a 'rising youngster' - whereas Rapport at 15 surely is, and Zherebukh at 17 also qualifies.
