Nine rounds in 13 days, starting on Monday 21 November (45 games). Rest days 23, 25, 29 & 30 November. Ólafsson won with 7.5/9. From 20 November, Berg en Dal (then in Ubbergen municipality) also hosted the Budapest Zonal Playoff (1960).

The tournament was meant to be a 18-player Zonal qualification for the Stockholm Interzonal (1962), but the allied authorities in West Berlin would not give visa to Wolfgang Uhlmann. In protest against this, the eastern chess federations did not allow Laszlo Szabo, Milko Bobotsov, Miroslav Filip, Bogdan Sliwa and Theodor Ghitescu to play, even if they had already arrived in Berg en Dal. Now with only 12 players left, also Petar Trifunovic and Borislav Ivkov withdrew. The tournament was held with 10 players, but was eventually annulled as a Zonal. It was replaced by the Marianske Lazne Zonal (1961), which was held without Larsen (who had a dispute with the Danish chess federation), Dückstein and Teschner. Ólafsson won that Zonal too, and qualified together with Filip and Uhlmann for the Interzonal. Dückstein and Teschner were compensated by being allowed to play a match (in Salzburg, Austria) for a fourth qualification spot.
