The 59th Annual Hoogovens Chess Tournament was a Category XVI event held in Wijk aan Zee, The Netherlands from January 19th to February 2nd, 1997. 14 top grandmasters competed in a round robin format in the prestigous A event. The participants were (in order of Elo): Nigel Short (2690), Valery Salov (2665), Predrag Nikolic (2655), Loek Van Wely (2645), Jeroen Piket (2640), Viktor Korchnoi (2635), Miguel Illescas-Cordoba (2635), Joel Lautier (2630), Jan Timman (2630), Alex Yermolinsky (2630), Igor Glek (2620), Julio Ernesto Granda-Zuniga (2620), Ivan Sokolov (2615), and Alexander Onischuk (2580).
