This match was a part of qualification group 4 for the 5th European team chess championship. As expected, the Belgian team led a resounding defeat. The game Beyen-Filip is one of the most famous in Belgian chess history, including a tactical motive which is sometimes known as Beyen's trick.

  GrahamClayton: The match was played over a weekend in the Ostend casino. After the games, the group went into town to fraternize and have a glass of wine. One glass became two, and soon it was time to decide whether to be fresh the next day or not. Hort had a lost game against Boey, and approached Boey with the question: “Look, we are doing well here and it is fun, but we have to play our game tomorrow. How about we agree to a draw now so we can have some more drinks? It has no consequences for the match result.” Boey thought about this and thought that a draw in that sharp position against Hort was certainly not wrong, and agreed. Boey then asks Hort: “Just for your information: what was your move actually?” To which Hort says: “That was xxx”. Boey: “But that loses, right?” and Hort: “I know that…”.
