Jun-17-14  GumboGambit: With all the European chess masters that stayed in Argentina after the outbreak of WWII, it is a shame that Petrov did not. The Latvian was sent to the Gulag by the Soviets, and died a few years later.

<GumboGambit> There was sometimes a steep price to pay for staying in Argentina after the tournament. <Najdorf's> wife and children were murdered by the Nazis after he emigrated to South America.

<Vladimirs Petrovs> chose not to abandon his wife and child in Europe. They survived the war, but he paid the price- death in the gulag.
