Hasselbacken Open (2016)

The 2016 Hasselbacken Open (30 April - 8 May) celebrated the 150th anniversary of the founding of Stockholms Schacksällskap (Stockholm Chess Club) in 1866. Scandic Hotel Hasselbacken was the tournament's host and main sponsor.

Two players - top seed Dmitry Andreikin of Russia, and Baskaran Adhiban of India - scored 7.5/9, winning their last-round games to break a ten-way tie at the top of the table. Andreikin won first prize based on tie-break criterion 1 (better Median-Buchholz score). Eleven players finished half a point behind the top two, Ilya Smirin having the best tie-break score; this group also included young talents Jorden van Foreest and Awonder Liang.

May-01-16  Clemens Scheitz: Poor Kumar, was lost in only 17 moves against Postny. I know it's silly but it reminded me of Harold and Kumar "are those my scissors scene" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQS...

Losing in 17(!) moves with White is a catastrophe.

May-02-16  suenteus po 147: Sam Sevian is off to a good start with +3 -0 =0. I'd be interested in seeing a showdown between him and Shirov.
May-02-16  Howard: I've been following Sevian's career ever since seeing him at the 2014 Foxwoods Open, when he was only 13. I didn't meet him, but he seemed pretty articulate for someone his age.
May-03-16  notyetagm: <suenteus po 147: Sam Sevian is off to a good start with +3 -0 =0. I'd be interested in seeing a showdown between him and Shirov.>

Wish granted.

Round 5: Shirov vs Sevian

May-04-16  Howard: Alert !!!!!

Sevian BEAT Shirov in Round 5----it was not a "draw" like Chessgames.com states.

Want proof ? Look at the final position, and try to keep from laughing at the notion that it's a "draw."

Chessgames Bookie: <Bratek> That was just the "what happens to the ten-way logjam at the top of the table?" special; ten players shared the lead with 6.5/8 with one round to go.

So then we have a two way tie for first
(Andreikin and Adhiban) and an eight-way tie for 2nd. Stefansson's score is actually 6.5/9 and Axle Smith is 4.5/7 and we're missing two games from him?

Chessgames Bookie: <PawnSac> Adhiban and Andreikin were the only players to score 7.5/9, yes. As noted in the intro, 11 players finished with 7.0/9; many games played on lower boards are currently missing, and Gujrathi Vidit Santosh needs to be merged with Santosh Gujrathi Vidit.

Hey thanks for the link! wow, 11 way tie for 2nd. With that many players in an open format it becomes a feeding frenzy! LOL

D Andreikin vs S P Sethuraman, 2016

Tabanus: Standings updated for the 50 players with 6 points or more. Three duplicate games were found, and one wrong game result (correction slips sent). The mysterious 5-mover E Thorn vs V Mikhalevski, 2016 I requested deleted, as the two did not play each other (in Chess-Results).
