beatgiant: <WorstPlayerEver> Netherlands Antilles top boards were Wim Blijstra and Ursus van Bemmelen.

Do you not agree that, to play on the Netherlands Antilles team in the Olympiad, a person needs to reside in one of the Netherlands' Carribean possessions?

Sep-27-16  WorstPlayerEver: <beatgigant>

Of course, but I think because we speak of such a tiny population they somehow left the NA be in chess.

beatgiant: <WorstPlayerEver> <Lesser Antilles> (your link above) and <Netherlands Antilles> are not exactly the same thing.

I thought it was obvious: the 'Lesser' page shows what nationalities each member have. Frankly, as a Dutchman, I never heard of either the 'Carribean Antilles' or 'Lesser Antilles' before I started googling.

There is not any Olympiad team for <Lesser Antilles>, but there are separate Olympiad teams for <Barbados>, <Netherlands Antilles> and <US Virgin Islands>, and I assume the corresponding residence requirements apply to members of these teams.

So my original statement stands: the <Netherlands Antilles> team is for people residing in possessions of the Netherlands. Are you saying something different?

Sep-27-16  WorstPlayerEver: <beatgigant>
No, but I wonder who would call themselves 'Lesser Carribeans.' Seems to make no sense. Crazy world, isn't it?
Sep-27-16  WorstPlayerEver: PS In fact we call it 'Small Antilles' (Kleine Antillen). Ironically 'Antilia' means 'New World.'
Little wonder it is such a mess.

Any way, here's the whole story:

If you want a belittling name, how about <U.S. Minor Outlying Islands>? That includes the likes of Midway, remembered mostly for some little splash fight in 1942.

And now, I'll let this thread gradually subside beneath the waves of future kibitzes...

HeMateMe: I was in a college lecture hall and the white, male professor referred to the Caribbean as "those banana republic islands." He got booed by several of the black students in attendance. That was back in the 80s.
Sep-27-16  WorstPlayerEver: Reminds me of Saba.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saba

The story goes that the Dutch queen once paid a visit to Saba in the fifties. For weeks everyone had worked hard to give the queen a warm welcome. But their plane didn't find a place to land lol There are no beaches either.

  Sally Simpson: It's official.

America does not have any chess grandmasters.

Another classic clanger from Donald Trump.

(Curtsey of Olimpiu Urcan for this 15 second clip).

Oct-12-16  Virgil A: "And we don't have any of them."

"them" he is referring to those negotiating deals for the government who have to be like grandmaster.

Sally Simpson: Yes it's a spin on his words. It's just poorly timed. (but a classic)

America win the Olympiad...yet have no grandmasters.

Interesting times ahead if this guy becomes President of the USA. I'm looking forward to it.

So it is... How will it appear in retrospect is another question.

Sally Simpson: No thread yet for the 2018 Olympiad -it starts on Monday.

Team line up's here.

https://batumi2018.fide.com/en/team

Vietnam have highest average rating. (3204) current champions USA 4th with (2777) bottom of the average ratings list is the Central African Republic (0).

Sep-22-18  Howard: You're right! Vietnam does have the "highest" average rating--on the main page, at least.

Sally Simpson: Yes they have indeed made a slight cock-up. It appears they only one they have correct is the Central African Republic with 0.

A good start.

Sally Simpson: Players in rating order here.

http://chess-results.com/tnr368908....

As expected Fabiano is number one.

the highest rated Russian is Kramnik (7th) but has been registered to play on board 3. Nepo (rated 10th) is their board 2 and Karjakin (rated 13th) is the board one. (board 4 is Vitiugov who is lower rated than the Russian board 5 Jakovenko )

it would appear the Russians are trying to fix World Chess.

Hi Perfidious,

And then it's back to the boring same old same old.

He was unpredictable, you had no idea what was coming next.

And it was interesting, a lot of conversations at the workplace began with...'You will ever guess what Trump has done now' and you couldn't!

His gimmick was simple. If he said something that people found outrageous, then he said something even more outrageous and then those offended by the former were shouted over by the latter and the first boo-boo was relegated to the page 9 small print next to the adverts for skinny men.

Of course as time passed he got more and more outrageous (and hilarious) "I'm going to buy Greenland." to take the flak away from his previous weeks remark. (what ever that was, but it would have been outrageous.)

I love the American public/voters, always game for a laugh, the Trump years was democracy at it's best. 'Let's give this guy a chance, it will be different.' in the UK he would not have been allowed near politics, he would be running a pub somewhere in the sticks, telling his regulars every night what was wrong with the world and refusing to serve anyone who disagreed with him.

Comedians will now have to revert back to cracking jokes about their first kiss and what they have in their fridge.

Cartoonists will struggle. Trump was easy to draw and capture, this new guy 'old what's his name' is too bland to characterise.

Politics just got dull again. In chess terms it would be like having Kramnik as world champion (again), last time that happened the greatest player the game ever produced quit chess.
