Polgar - Xie Women's World Championship Match (1996)

"After a couple of fairly short draws, the organizer Luís Rentero - the man behind the famous Linares tournaments - intervened in a way that made the players extremely upset: He accused them of having gone to Jaén just for tourism and announced that he intended to deduct $25,000 from the prize money (a total of $200,000, approximately 1.3 million kronor)! - I have never been so insulted in my entire life, said Zsuzsa, and in a furious response she pointed out to Rentero that it was actually an official FIDE affair and not a private event. Jun Xie seemed to have been most affected by the incident - in any case, the world champion mishandled a promising position in the fourth game and lost the fifth game too, just by chance. The initiative then passed to the challenger, who also won games 7 and 8 to decide the match." (Tidskrift för Schack, transl.)

Xie was accompanied by the Secretary General of the Chinese Chess Federation, a foreign affairs official, a parapsychologist and others. Main sponsor and technical director: Luis Rentero Suarez. After 13 games, Polgar became the new women'a world champion.
