Introduction
At the conclusion of the first day's play in the fourteenth annual intercollegiate chess tournament, begun yesterday afternoon at the West Side Republican Club, No. 2,307 Broadway, in this city, Columbia's representatives took the lead over Harvard and Yale, while Princeton brought up the rear.

As in former years four students from each of the four universities of Columbia, Harvard, Yale and Princeton were ready to start when the director of play, Charles Curt, called time at 1 o'clock. (1)
