Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
German Championship (1938)

The 5th championship of Nazi Germany was a 16-player round robin held at the Kurhaus in Bad Oeynhausen, a town between Bielefeld and Hannover, with daily rounds from 24 July to 7 August 1938. The field consisted of the top seven players from the German Championship (1937) (Kieninger (the defending champion), Richter, Rellstab, Michel, Kranki, Schmitt, Reinhardt), six players from three regional "Zonen" tournaments (Kohler, Eisinger, Engels, Herrmann, Koch, Nowarra), and three masters from the recently annexed "Ostmark" (Austria) (Eliskases, Becker, Weil). Weil apparently being a late replacement for Ernst Gruenfeld. Time control: 2 hours for the first 36 moves, and then 1 more hour for every 18 moves. Games were played from 9 am - 1 pm and 3-7 pm.

Erich Eliskases won with 12.5/15.
