Reggio Emilia. The 53rd Torneo di Capodanno in Reggio Emilia ITA was held Dec 26, 2010 through Jan 6, 2011. Vugar Gashimov and Francisco Vallejo Pons were equal first with 6 points each. Berkeley International. The Berkeley International 2011 (Jan) was won by Loek van Wely NED with 8/10. However, US Junior Champion Samuel Shankland (6.5 points) made his final GM norm to become the United State's most recent Grandmaster. Tatev Abrahamyan, also with 6.5 points, made a WGM norm. The 73rd traditional Tata Steel Chess Tournament was held in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands from Jan 14th to Jan 31st. Hikaru Nakamura won his first super-tournament with 9/13 half a point clear of World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand. There were three groups, as usual, with Group A average ELO 2736 and a category 20. The “B” group saw the leaders Navara and McShane both with 8.0/12 playing for first place in the last round. The draw favored McShane whose tiebreak was better. Daniele Vocaturo won the "C" group with an outstanding score of 9/13. The original company, that held the annual tournament, Koninklijke Hoogovens was a Dutch steel producer founded in 1918. In 1999, the company merged with British Steel to create Corus Group steel company. In 2007, Corus Group was purchased by India-based Tata Steel and now, almost four years later, the chess tournament is named after the parent company.
