Queen's Bishop Fianchetto
Compiled by Metrocles
--*--

This will be a collection of 1. b3 and 1... b7 games (or 1. Nf3, 2. b3 games) played by selected players of the past (Owen; Gunsberg, Nimzowitsch, Simagin, Fischer, Larsen, Csom, Bagirov, Benko, Basman, Miles) and frequent modern users (GM Pavel Blatny, GM Artashes Minasian, GM Nona Gaprindashvili, GM Edvīns Ķeņģis, GM Normunds Miezis, IM Christian Bauer, IM Emmanuel Bricard; IM Branko Filipovic). I have now created separate collections for Nimzowitsch and Simagin and removed their games from this collection. Super-GM blitz games were not included.

Gioachino Greco described the moves 1... b6, 2... Bb7 in the 17th century, and fianchettoing White's queen's bishop in the opening was recorded in 1851 in a game by Dutch player Maarten van't Kruijs, but the idea has only seen intermittent popularity over the decades. The very strong English amateur John Owen played it extensively as White and Black in the 1870s as did Aron Nimzowitsch at the start of the hypermodern movement in the 1920s. Few today remember that Vladimir Simagin played the opening frequently in the 40s to 60s. Today, Bent Larsen and Bobby Fischer are usually credited with reviving interest White's use of it in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and two lesser known GMs, Itsvan Csom and Vladimir Bagirov, made even more use of it later in the 1970s.

The opening has become known as the Nimo-Larsen Attack for White or the Owen's Defense for Black. A bad loss by Larsen against Boris Spassky in 1970, which is found in many collections, and the fact that it tends to be used by strong GMs only in blitz games as a means of not revealing opening preparation in their main openings, have left it with a reputation as a lesser opening.
