  WTHarvey: Fwiw, Steinitz could have played Qg8+ a move earlier for a mate in 5: 40.Qg8+ if Rxg8 41.Rxg8+ Kc7 42.Rxb7+ Kd6 43.Rd8+ or if 40...Kc7 41.Rxb7+ Kd6 42.Rg6+
Aug-23-07  paul1959: This was played at 15 moves per hour and one might suspect time trouble. 40...Rh-e8 would have been embarrasing ater White missed the mate. ( Re2+ and Bd6 are now threats)

Pawn and Two: Steinitz erred at move 22 with 22.gxh4?. Much stronger, with advantage for White was 22.Ne5.

Paulsen should have played 26...Rd7, with an almost equal game, considering his 2 bishops and White's weak pawns. 26...Rxh4? allows the annihilation of his kingside pawns.

Honza Cervenka: 26...Rxh4 was a blunder. Paulsen probably miscalculated or overestimated his chances on h-file after 27.Qxe7. He could have in mind the text position after 30...Qc6 and missed possibility of 31.d4 with covering of Ph3 by the second Rook from a3. But 31.Kh2 seems to be sufficient defence as well and so it is quite probable that 26...Rxh4?? was played in zeitnot (quite usual problem of L.P. in tournaments where chess clocks were used). Steinitz's opening play was quite original.
