Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-21-08  Knight13: Black's 28...Bb5, trying to trade his miserable bishop for White's good one, backfired after White took on f5. But the kingside and that pawn on e6 is already too weak, and ready to crack so I guess it didn't matter that much by then. And realizing that Black's hopeless if he just sit around, he launches an attack against the king which fails.

Feb-21-08  Knight13: <whiteshark: <17...c5> is worth consideration> A lot better than 17...h5?! for sure.

Blackburne and Zukertort indicated 41... Ba2+ would have drawn. The main line goes 42.Kb2 Qd1 43.Qd6+ Ka8 44.Rc1 Qb3+ 45.Ka1 Qa4 (not 45... Rc6? 46.Qxc6 ..) 46.Kb2 Qb3+ 47.Ka1 Qa4 with repetition.

Bird hadn't shown up the previous 5 rounds because of serious health problems (gout), but wanted to play this last round game because first prize (for Steinitz) was at stake and was carried to the tournament site on a stretcher. Had Bird drawn this game, Winawer would have been the sole winner.
