Phony Benoni: Cohn decides that the best way to play against Marshall is to get him before he gets you. Unfortunately 22.Nxf7 gets him instead, since 24...Qxg5 allows 25.Qxc7+ getting the innocent bystander on b8. Soon the exposed king is gone and forgotten.

Get it?

Nov-21-07  suenteus po 147: <Phony Benoni: Get it?> Got it, but only after you explain it. I would be hard pressed to see how far ahead 22.Nxf7 is effective and should be prevented. I'm not surprised that Cohn fell into it.

louispaulsen88888888: 20...Kt-Q4! would avoid all that.

fredthebear: 25...h6?? to save the pawn w/a threat of capture is a mistake, if White sees the punishment. The zwischenzug check 26.Qf3+ leads to another cooperative queen and knight finish. (20...Nxe4 triggers the mating combination, so Marshall shows his impressive combinational foresight.)

If 26...Kg6 27.Qf7#.

If 26...Ke7 27.Qf7+ Kd6 28.Qe6#.

A pleasing finish that is worthy of publication -- and so it is!

plang: Spielmann had played 5..Bg4 against Marshall a few rounds earlier and Marshall had responded 6 h3 with the game ending in a short draw; 6 Qa4+ was a clear improvement.

Marshall after 15..Rb8:
"Black is in difficulties, because the need for protecting the KP precludes his neutralizing the pin with...Be7."

Marco offers 20..Nd5! 21 Bxe7..Nxc3 22 Bxd8..Rbxd8 23 Nb3..Ne2+ regaining the pawn.

perfidious: <plang>, I believe Marshall's innovation put this line out of business.

plang: That makes sense - thanks.
Aug-05-22  Little Caezarz: <perfidious> No, the line is still good. Black can play 5...Bg4 6.Qa4+ says Stockfish:

Black to move [Opening Explorer]

1) -0.01 (19 ply) 6...Bd7 7.Qc2 Nc6 8.b4 Bd6 9.b5 Na5 10.d4 Qe7 11.Bd3 c6 12.dxe5 Bxe5 13.Nxe5 Qxe5 14.bxc6 Nxc6 15.O-O Nf6 16.Ba3 Ne7 17.Nd2 O-O

Black is fine after retreating 6...Bd7.
