Apr-16-06  notyetagm: What a chess genius Charousek was. Here Charousek announced a mate in 5 beginning with 37 ♕c6+.

It seems strange to swap queens when playing a mating attack but here the remaining White bishops and rooks coordinate to trap the Black a8-king in a corridor on the a-file (<Greco mate>): 37 ♕c6+! ♕xc6 38 ♗xc6+ ♖b7 39 ♖xa7+! ♔xa7 40 ♖a1+ ♘a4 41 ♖xa4#.

A lovely <Greco mate> on the a-file, with the White c7- and c6-bishops covering the critical flight squares b8, b7, and b6 of the Black a7-king. I have never seen this particular pattern with the Greco mate before, the flight squares off of the rook file all covered by adjacent bishops. Have a look at the final mating pattern for yourself:

Apr-23-07  Autoreparaturwerkbau: Very nice analysis, <notyetagm>, to a brillant endgame technique of Charousek's.
