May-29-03  dbailey: If 47. .. Rxd5 then 48. Ng6+ Kg8 49. Nxe7+ Kf7 (or Kg8) 50. Nxd5 wins.
Feb-28-08  Knight13: 9...a6? ...Bd7 is better. (Chigorin did this ...Bg4 ...exd4 ...Bd7 thing a lot maybe Steinitz didn't wanna copy?)
Mar-12-15  Whitehat1963: Excellent Wednesday puzzle after 46...Qe7.

fredthebear: 37.g4 fashion's the shape of Greco's Mate pattern along an open h-file (following Ng6+). Here the White queen (instead of a bishop) cuts off the Black king's escape on g8. Black is able to prevent this pattern. (37...Qc8?? would have allowed Greco's Mate.)

A help-mate Philidor's Legacy (double discovered check, Q sac on g8, and Nf7# smothered mate) could also crop up if the Black queen aborts it's defense of f7 and the Black rook fails to give up the exchange for the checking knight.

45.Ne5 somewhat revives these mating pattern possibilities should an incorrect Black response occur. White has been applying pressure but cannot force the issue.

The final move 47.QxNd5! is an attempt to deflect the Black rook off the 6th rank to re-capture the White queen. This RxQ re-capture would allow Ng6+, a royal family fork that wins back the Black queen and the re-capturing rook! This would have been a very showy maneuver for the White knight. <dbailey> gives the re-capture line above had Black chosen to play on.

So, no checkmate evolves, but the lurking possibility limits Black until he drops the Black knight making continuance unreasonable.

alexmagnus: Lichess' engine analysis says this was the least accurate world championship game ever.
