Check It Out: Coleslaw is often served with fish and chips here in the states.

offramp: I know what coleslaw is, in fact I'm eating some right now. I also know that slaw means Slav. I think what I'm trying to day is: Can someone explain the pun to me?
May-15-14  shivasuri4: <Young Ed: I wonder if 10. Bc4 with the idea of retreating to b3 if needed might work out.>

No, that drops the e4 pawn.

May-15-14  morfishine: <offramp> "Colle slaw" is not a pun at all, so don't bother; unless someone can engage in a convoluted stretch of the imagination connecting chopped cabbage and mayo with chess, than this term only qualifies as silly word play

Very fine game though, I really enjoyed the ultra smooth-order employed by Capa, especially his capture/recapture sequences

*****

May-15-14  Petrosianic: <"Colle slaw" is not a pun at all,>

Especially since "Colle" is pronounced "collie".

May-15-14  kiraito: Colle Slaught.
May-15-14  mrknightly: In fact, why is this called an Indian game instead of a Colle System?
May-15-14  kevin86: I would think that the name is pronounced "Collie" that we would have a pun that would go to the dogs.

I always thought the name was not pronounced like "coal"

Frankly,I hate cole slaw and I dislike the pun also.o

offramp: This must be the worst pun ever!
I can't think of a worse one. And the cherry on the trifle is some yutz joyfully giving me a link to tell me what coleslaw is. As if I just got off the banana boat. Faites-moi un faveur, mec.
May-15-14  Petrosianic: There's a poem in some old book that tells you how to pronounce all the old Master's names, and a lot of them aren't what you think. Some of the most misprounced:

Colle (rhymes with Collie)

Tarrasch (rhymes with Parish)

Bisguier (Biz-guy-er, with no "W" sound)

Euwe (sounds like "Erva")

Alekhine (sounds like "Al-yek-kin")

Keres (sounds like "Care-ESS")

Pirc (sounds like "Peerts")

Dus-Chotimirsky (best not pronounced at all)

Fischer (sounds like "Fisher"... okay, maybe that one's not so hard)

May-15-14  RedShield: <This must be the worst pun ever!>

Evidently, it should have been <Colle Slaughtered>. But these people who submit puns, they never think!

May-15-14  Absentee: Maybe we could use the IPA.
May-15-14  Petrosianic: Oh, another good one:

(Anatol) Lein (sounds like Lois Lane's last name).

May-15-14  RookFile: Colle was a strong attacker, but Capa turned him back with ease here.
May-15-14  RookFile: By the way, I could go for some potato salad now.

tamar: What Lassie had for lunch-Colle Slaw
May-15-14  RookFile: Indeed, sir. lol
May-15-14  WDenayer: Colle is not pronounced Collie. Colle is pronounced like protocol, without the proto, adding le, like in volleyball, without the yball.Perhaps it's just unexplainable in English.
May-15-14  Petrosianic: I haven't found the poem I mentioned, but here's a Name Pronunciation Guide that confirms that Colle is indeed pronounced KAW-lee.

http://www.chess.com/article/view/p...

May-15-14  thulium: <morfishine> It's a very apt pun. After Capa took the initiative with 12.Bc2, Colle was on the run, sustaining a slice off his position or pawns with almost every move, until he ended up like, well, cole-slaw.
May-15-14  WDenayer: Colle is not pronounced KAW-lee, the name pronunciation guide is crap. I'm originally from Belgium. I know how Colle is pronounced. It doesn't sound like KAW-lee one bit. Euwe does not sound like Erva at all. I do not know who's making up such nonsense.

  WannaBe: KAW-lee as rhymes with Gaw-ly? =)
May-15-14  Rookiepawn: <Petrosianic> It says that, true, but the final "lee" seems rather an English pronunciation. I tend to think it is more what <WDenayer> says, which sounds more French. The final "e" is like the first "e" in English "better", but a little shorter, more like an innuendo than really saying it. The famous tricky frenchy e. So I guess, anyway.
May-15-14  weisyschwarz: Good pun. Cole slaw is made from shredded cabbage, and Capablanca shredded Colle's opening.

Believe you me, there have been far far worse puns than this.
