Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-27-05  A.Alekhine: Euwe totally exposed Flohr's kingside for his exploitation and eventually Flohr gave in after realising he's in a bad position..
Jul-25-07  vizir: would make a nice puzzle

28...Qa5 29.b4 Qxa3 30.Nxd5+ and 31.Qxa3

or

28...Qd6 29.Qf6+ Ke8 30.Rg8+ xf8

Mar-03-09  rchczrms: Perhaps a quicker kill like 28...Qa5 29.Qf7+ where taking the Queen leads to mate.
Jun-10-22  Brenin: I think that one has to grossly mispronounce Euwe to make this ingenious pun really work.
Jun-10-22  goodevans: <Brenin> Indeed so. The pun would be terrific if it weren't for that fact and, to be fair, so do the puns for most GOTD's involving him.

I guess a some folk will see the pun and make the same mispronunciation mentally and so the pun will really work for them. But he's a former World Champion for heaven's sake so you'd like to think that most devotees of chess when seeing his name wouldn't make that mistake.

Here's another GOTD involving Max Euwe that includes you and I being involved in a discussion about how his name is pronounced: Euwe vs E M Holloway, 1920

Missy was there too in that discussion and so clearly didn't give much credit to this comment: <ndg2: No, Miss Scarlett, foreigners don't have problem with the concept of puns. But all too often, the puns here rely on the willful misspronouncation of players name which is kinda disrespectful.>

Jun-10-22  spingo: By move 20...

...Euwe has ♘♘ v ♗♗. Flohr's bishops seemed to be a bit useless. They had nothing to aim at.

Earlier I am puzzled by...

14...Kf8.
It looks early to start taking evasive action.

Everyone must know this game, Fischer vs Petrosian, 1970.

17...Kf8!?

Jun-10-22  Z free or die: I'm Flohr'ed that someone would stoop so low to make a pun that they'd call a GM a dunce!

Only one person on <CG> would do that, and we all know Euwe it is.

louispaulsen88888888: But me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.
Jun-11-22  Saniyat24: The dancing Mona Lisa...!
Jun-11-22  Saniyat24: ...or maybe Scarlett fever...!
Jun-12-22  Z free or die: <<Missy> Oh! ye'll take the high road, and I'll take the low road,
and I'll be in Scotland afore ye.>

You go Euwe, and I'll go mine.
