  FSR: A Fine attack.
Oct-11-14  Mr Bigz: These kingside assaults in semi-closed positions are some of the best attacks to be found.
Jan-23-19  HarryP: This game contributed to my love for the Dutch Defense. Fine's 8th move is questionable, actually, and Horowitz should have replied 9 d5, which is what Fine himself played when he had White against Bogolyubov at Nottingham 1936.

gezafan: The game has similarities to a king's indian.
Aug-06-19  gosusensei: a dutch attack!
Nov-12-20  neveramaster: This was an instructional game in an old Chessmaster computer program.

OhioChessFan: Inexplicably highly rated pun. Great game anyway.

FSR: 12 years, 4 months, and 18 days. This shatters the previous record for known time elapsed between submission of the pun and its use for GOTD.

OhioChessFan: Okay, might get a little slack for being an early Fine pun.

Korora: I see that Fine remembered to... double check.

al wazir: Did black really need all that artillery for his attack (two knights, two bishops, two rooks, and the queen)?

offramp: Today Mr <FSR> submitted a solid but not earth-shatteringly witty Pun for today. I consider it a place-holder for Pun for the Day, a fly-by-the-night, a transient Pun, a here-today and, if I may say so, gone-tomorrow Pun, which I mean in the very best way - no offence!

All of the puns at <chessgames> have been given a rating on the HISPIDU at the <Dark Web Universe>.

Today's Pun scored a lowly 11.76.

Recently one of those puns were so bad that the chessgames punster was sentenced to 360 hours of community service.

MissScarlett: This <GOTD> was, truth be told, selected by mistake. In fact, I don't even remember selecting it. I am unable to correct such errors in a timely fashion. Still, it enjoys my lukewarm approval.

Now I have solved that, can someone please explain the pun.

Teyss: I'll take the pun with a pinch of salt, where fine = delicate, restrained, subdued. Indeed Fine didn't use the kitchen sink. Corrected with this interpretation the HISPIDU rating rises to 11.85. Great game anyhow, good pick <FSR>.

<Recently one of those puns were so bad that the chessgames punster was sentenced to 360 hours of community service.> Yes he was forced to remove most offensive posts from Rogoff. In 360 hours he managed to delete 0.001% of them. He now rests in an asylum.

FSR: <Sally Simpson> What is that supposed to be, a helpmate? As for the pun, the game features an attack conducted by Reuben Fine, thus a Fine Attack.

  Sally Simpson: Hi FSR,

As this POTD was not meant to be a POTD I turned it into a HOTD. Helpmate of the Day. I was being a bit cheeky asking for someone to please explain the pun. We are fine.

beatgiant: <al wazir> Black could also try launching the attack before completing all the preparation, for example the immediate 16...Bxg4 looks strong: 16...Bxg4 17. fxg4 Nxg4 18. Bf3 Ng5 19. Bxg4 Qxg4+ 20. Kh1 Rf6, followed by bringing up the other rook and throwing in a kingside pawn storm.

But it's much more thematic and probably stronger as Fine played, launching the attack only after assembling all the forces.

Was a Fine levied too?

  offramp: <thegoodanarchist: ...Was a Fine levied too?> I think your comment😎🤣 has definitely improved today's pun!💯
Feb-09-24  sfm: Ouch. The good old "Don't play f6" (- or f3) is true again. converting an equal position (if 13. Nb3) to advantage for Black.
Feb-10-24  jffun1958: Nice finish, and absolutely forced.

Thank you kindly!

I must note, you are too humble, sir, for a man whose fingerprints are all over today's GOTD, and have been for more than 19 years:
