Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-17-18  tjshann: Monday. Hmm...no Queen Sac possible. Guess it means I have to Sac the Rook
Dec-17-18  lost in space: I love Mondays!

47.Rxe8+ Kxe8 48.Nd6+ K(any legal move) 49.Nxb7 and 1:0 (piece plus pawn up)

Dec-17-18  ChessHigherCat: <tjshann>: that's exactly what I was going to say :-)
Dec-17-18  patzer2: Knight fork Monday was easy today with 47. Rxe8+ +-.

For a Black improvement, I slightly prefer the popular move 2...Nf6 = to ⩲ as in Black's win in the blitz game Ding Liren vs Caruana, 2018.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Personally, would have played 6...Bxc3+ just for the sake of consistency. Kasparov surely would have had a good laugh.
Dec-17-18  Cheapo by the Dozen: The old sac-and-fork trick.
Dec-17-18  agb2002: White has an extra pawn.

The knight is trapped after 47.Rxe8+ Kxe8 48.Nd6+ Kf8 49.Nxb7 Be7 but the white king can march to d5 to play Nd6 and Black can't stop it.

Dec-17-18  Cheapo by the Dozen: The puzzle would have been a little better if it started one move earlier.
Dec-17-18  saturn2: I saw 47. Rxe8+ Kxe8 48. Nd6+ Ke7
49. Nxb7

Black can hamper the knight by

49...Bc7

But the black king cannot cross the d file. White can procede on the kingside.

Dec-17-18  OrangeTulip: The most basic tactics there is.
You have to see this in one (or two) seconds, if not time to start training your tactics!
Dec-17-18  mel gibson: Took me 5 seconds - easy one.
Dec-17-18  stacase: More than 5 seconds here, and afterward it might be sticky to get the knight out of the corner. But Black dumped his king so it doesn't matter.
Dec-17-18  Walter Glattke: Knight fork, we love Mondays. 49.-Bc7 50.Kf3 could go to c6.
Dec-17-18  cocker: After taking the rook, White's knight is stuck on b7, but this doesn't seem to matter.
Dec-17-18  Lambda: Needs a little thought after you see the tactic, the knight is trapped on b7, and opposite coloured bishops speak against just taking a pawn with it and accepting a two pawn advantage. But the black king is trapped in a box, the white king can march up to c6 and attack the all-important b6 pawn, and all black can do is counterattack the white kingside pawns, which isn't going to be enough against the piece advantage with a collapsing black queenside.
Dec-17-18  whiteshark: After I lost yesterday in a team match my won game and thus the competition, I am glad not to have lost all my chess knowledge...
Dec-17-18  zb2cr: White wins a piece by 47. Rxe8+, Kxe8; 48. Nd6+ forking the Black Rook at b7.
Dec-17-18  Ceri: <mel gibson:

I don't know how to set the hash table.
I have 16 Gig of RAM but Stockfish 10 is only using a tiny part of it. I can't seem to make it use more RAM. I have an i7 2600k quad core.>

From yesterday.

I use a Shredder GUI and when I change the engine, it asks me to input the amount of hash.

Mine is a Dell 7700 all-in-one with an AMD Ryzen 1700 CPU and 16 Gig of RAM. That benches at 10% faster than yours in single thread and 2.3 x as fast as yours in multi-thread.

Cheers,

Ceri

Penguincw: Yay, easy Monday puzzle to start the week.

Normally Mondays have queen sac, but there is no queen, so you sacrifice the next most valuable piece - the rook.

I'll check it out.

I'm using the Arena interface.
I had another look and it just can't be forced to use more RAM. I could be doing something wrong.

Dec-17-18  boringplayer: White's bishop and knight form a barrier, preventing the Black king from attacking the knight.

you're right - I can increase the hash table & use more RAM.
