Oct-14-10  rilkefan: I was wondering about 10...Ke8 - nothing jumped out after Qh5, so maybe just 11.Nf7 followed by d3, consolidating, and resuming the attack.

  al wazir: It wouldn't have been as evergreen, but white could also have won with 14. Qxg3+ Kd4 (14...Kd2 15. Qd3#) 15. Nd5 Kc5 (if any other move, then 16. Qc3#) 16. Qc3+ Kb5 17. a4+ Ka6 18. Qc4+ b5 19. Qxb5#.
Oct-14-10  Benzol: Is "Passing The Buck" a better pun than the one that was used?
Oct-14-10  Once: So let's count the pieces. Black has lost a pawn, white has lost three pawns. Black's e pawn has ended the game all the way over on h2.

Black has all his pieces left, but white has given up queen, knight and both bishops.

Sounds like a massacre ... and it is - for white! The black king is mated all alone on e3.

Brutal chess.

Oct-14-10  NewLine: This game is out of this world!
Oct-14-10  Sim1: Amazing that this game was played in 1932, 20 years before Fischer's "refutation" of the King's Gambit.

Maybe some of the stronger players on here would care to comment on the differences between this line for black and Fischer's?

Oct-14-10  Metameryk: "Pearl Buck" might fit better. This is striking, amusing and painful at the same time. Line when Black accepts all offered pawns (f4, g3, h2) looks suicidal though.
Oct-14-10  moi: 8...Bg3 ? what an horrible move!
Oct-14-10  weisyschwarz: "Make a Quick Buck".
Oct-14-10  Madmartigan: I can remember winning a tournament game with the "three pawns gambit" as white as well some years back. While not objectively correct, the mere fact that after 7. ..., gxh2 8. Kh1 my opponent started to think for 20 minutes to me was worth the pawns already, :).
Oct-14-10  kevin86: Six for a buck: After move fourteen, white threatened-

15 ♖d3#;15 ♖f3#;15 ♕f3#;15 ♕e2#;15 ♕xg3#;15 ♘d5#. Black prevented all mates but the first.

Oh,deer!

Oct-14-10  nevski: Is this guy, Buck, a blind man?Or is he a patzer, perhaps?
Oct-14-10  lost in space: yes, brutal chess

FSR: This game was in Irving Chernev's classic <The 1000 Best Short Games of Chess>. I remember Chernev remarking that after 14.Rad1 White threatened no fewer than six mates in one.

Accordingly, I have changed the date of the game from1932 to 1931. The latter date is not certain, but 1932 cannot be correct.
