| Jan-01-07 | | HelaNubo: Happy New Year to everybody. As to the game, I did find 36... Rd1+ 37. Kxd1 Qd3+ with mate, and I also think a mate is far better than a rook. So, probably, Rd1 and Qd3 is the real solution. (Maybe Kramnik was in time trouble and went for the first winning line he saw.) |

Not only were there tempting second moves, but you had to discard the three other tempting first moves. Two defensive ones Qb5, Qb6 and the other offensive one Qxf1. Excellent puzzle. |

Rd2, which I think is just as good or better:
35. ..., Rd2; 36.Rf2 (either), RxR; 37.RxR, PxR; 38.KxP, Qe2+; 39.Kg1, Ba7+ and in addition to losing the R, White must give up the Q to avoid immediate mate (which will be coming after Rd4 anyway). |

Ke1 permits 38...exf1# (mate because of the double-check). Other king moves (besides 38. Ke1)allow 38...Qe2+, and soon white will be mated by the queen and rook. |
