Jan-01-07  WickedPawn: Got it, but it's a bit hard for a Monday, at least for me, who doesn't usually make it beyond Thursday. Is this an indication of something new for 2007? Happy New Year to all ChessGames fellows!
CG.com: definitely the best website for chess.

Phony Benoni: Didn't get it. Kept looking for a draw.
Jan-01-07  chopin4525: yeah this is the first time i found the correct solution and i am very happy ^_______^ wonderful game by kramnik but i still don't like his chess style!
Jan-01-07  HelaNubo: Happy New Year to everybody. As to the game, I did find 36... Rd1+ 37. Kxd1 Qd3+ with mate, and I also think a mate is far better than a rook. So, probably, Rd1 and Qd3 is the real solution. (Maybe Kramnik was in time trouble and went for the first winning line he saw.)
Jan-01-07  ALEXIN: Yes 36. Rd1 and 37.Qd3 are the best moves, leading to a forced mate.
Jan-01-07  awfulhangover: I "played" 37.-Qd3+ and think it's better than Kramnik, the helpmate in 1 - kid.

cu8sfan: Rather hard for a Monday. It's not that I had not seen the solution but with all the artillery aiming for the white ♔ I was looking for an immediate mate somewhere.
Jan-01-07  kbaumen: Not so Mondayish, but nut too difficult, though at first glance I thought it's white's move, and therefore an easy mate in 4, but it's actually black's move.
Jan-01-07  Hoozits: Isn't 37...,Qd3 at least as quick?
Jan-01-07  Hoozits: I have to say that this one feels more difficult than a typical Monday.
Jan-01-07  DeepThought: Yeah, i got a 100% score in 2007! Hopefully I can extend to Tuesday :-)

Although I didn't see the mate, I saw that any answer on e2 would give Black a distinctive advantage/if not mate.

Jan-01-07  aldehyde: happy new year to all. i hope i would be able to solve all puzzles round this yr like i solved out this one.
Jan-01-07  greensfield: Agree with <dzechiel> < Not as easy as your typical Monday puzzle (but probably because there were multiple tempting second moves).> Not only were there tempting second moves, but you had to discard the three other tempting first moves. Two defensive ones Qb5, Qb6 and the other offensive one Qxf1. Excellent puzzle.
Jan-01-07  hecrmara: Hoozits 37.-...,Qd3 is not only quick, is definitive itself.

GoldenKnight: Rd1+ was the first move I looked at, but I rejected it in favor of: Rd2, which I think is just as good or better:

35. ..., Rd2; 36.Rf2 (either), RxR; 37.RxR, PxR; 38.KxP, Qe2+; 39.Kg1, Ba7+ and in addition to losing the R, White must give up the Q to avoid immediate mate (which will be coming after Rd4 anyway).

Sneaky: 37...Qd3+ is good, but 36...Qd3?? is folly.
Jan-01-07  WBP: On 35...Rd2, 36.Rb8+, Kb8 36.Rf8+, Qc8 37.Rxc8+, Kxc8 38.Nf4, and although I prefer black's position (with all that stuff bearing down on the king), it's still not a clear-cut win...or is it?
Jan-01-07  FritoHead: i missed it, saw qxf1 followed by e2, but i guess there are lots of perpetual possibilities for white, and it probably doesnt work at all anyway
Jan-01-07  c o r e: I nailed this one like it was a monday puzzle. ... Oh, it IS monday? Drat.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Jan-01-07  YouRang: After found 36...Rd2, but worried that white might find a counter-attack. Then I found 36...Rd1+! and noticed that 37. Kxd1 e2+ 38. Ke1 permits 38...exf1# (mate because of the double-check).

Other king moves (besides 38. Ke1)allow 38...Qe2+, and soon white will be mated by the queen and rook.

Jan-01-07  kevin86: Black doesn't gain much-materialwise,but he gets the opportunity to chase the king to his eventual doom.
Jan-01-07  weisyschwarz: Yes! Went for the obvious sac, hoping for the best, and it worked out.
Jan-01-07  marcwordsmith: Doesn't 37. . . Qd3+ also lead to mate?
38. Kc1, Rc4+ 39. Kb2, Rc2+ and now if Ka1, Qa3+ and Qa2 mate. Or 40. Kb1, Qb3+ and mate next move. Am I wrong?
Jan-01-07  marcwordsmith: OOPS. Sorry. ChessMoron and others already scooped me on that line. But I'm glad it's sound and I'm not crazy!
Jan-03-07  gmgomes: 37... Qd3+ => mate in 5 / 37... e2+ => mate in 8.
