Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-06-04  Helloween: This was an interesting struggle. The Black Queen is powerless against White's multitude of forces. 39.Rf8+ initiates a mate in 5.
Feb-10-19  zydeco: 4....Nd4 is Rubinstein's variation, but that turns out to be a misnomer. Rubinstein didn't play it until 1912 and it had been played around a dozen times before then, and a few times by Marshall. The move is very much in Marshall's style.

Marshall unexpectedly wimps out with 17....Bg4. Consistent with his previous play is 17....Bxd5 18.Bxd5 Qxd5 19.Qxg7 0-0-0 and then if 20.Rxf7? Rdg8 wins (21.Rc7+ Kb8 and white is out of checks). So 20.Qxf7 and white is up a pawn but black has counterplay.

Marshall is in full swindle mode with 26....Bxh3!? but Tarrasch coolly gives up his queen and enters a won endgame.

MissScarlett: The <played around a dozen times before then, and a few times by Marshall> variation doesn't have quite the same ring about it.
