Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-14-05  Karpova: 8.ndb5 a double-edged move

8....qd1:+? may sound strange but this is the losing move. 8...a6! should have been played. white gets the superior endgame now.

21.rhd1! (21....rad8? 22.rq7: rq7: 23.rc8+ bd8 24.na7:)

29.nc4! (not 29.nc8:+ rc8: 30.ba6:? rc2+ and rb2:)

30.ne5:! nice little combination (30...be5: 31.bc4+ kf6 32.rd6+ and be5:)

37.bc with the threat of rf7+ winning a piece.

A fascinating game!

Jun-13-05  Everett: How is this a "Benoni" formation?
Jun-13-05  aw1988: With 3. d4.
Jun-14-05  Everett: white with a pawn at d5 could make this a Benoni. Not in this game.
Jun-14-05  aw1988: No, but this is not the Benoni itself. This is the Benoni *formation*.
Jun-14-05  Everett: Whoever labelled this originally has a "formation" impeding correct nomenclature.
Jul-24-07  Karpova: <Karpova: 8...a6! should have been played.>

8...a6! 9.Qxd8+ (<9.Qa4 Nc6 is not too good. The knight will have to retreat because Bd7 is threatened and the Queen turns out to be misplaced with black threatening b5 and Be6>) 9...Kxd8 10.Na3 and white has no advantage.

GrahamClayton: One of only 3 games Tarrasch played at Berlin. He withdrew from the tournament due to illness, and received 200 marks as compensation.
Dec-27-17  Albion 1959: Incredible to think that a player of Tarrasch's ability played Rubinstein 20 times over a 17 year period and failed to win a single game !
Jun-14-20  Granny O Doul: Perhaps it's been changed since the above comments, but the opening is now classed as "anti-Benoni formation". Still an odd name since it is Black (with 3...cxd4) who renders the game definitely not a Benoni. It'd be like calling the French or Caro-Kann the "anti-Sicilian defense".
