Mar-14-06 | | RandomVisitor: Napoleon missed 10.Qg4=. The Turk missed 10...Qg5 when it is mate in 8. |
Mar-16-06 | | McCool: 19. ..Qf2 seems better don't you think? |
Mar-27-06 | | KYENNY139: Terrible game. They were not playing like experts! |
Mar-28-06 | | EricCartman: well, that's because they weren't experts |
Mar-28-06 | | RandomVisitor: <McCool>Actually, Qg2 and Qf2 both mate in 8 or 9 moves so the "best" move is one of preference. Believe me, if I were crammed into that machine I would want to get the game over as fast as possible... |
May-11-06 | | spirit: <snoopDogg> Hitler at the time sought for anything that could make him appear as god...phoney propoganda films, overblown military might...etc...overrated chess genius could easily come before the first etc...etc |
Jun-29-06 | | RookFile: I think RandomVisitor is quite right, it looks like lights about after 10....Qg5. |
Nov-09-06 | | Ch3ckmate: the turk was a famous chess machine in those days, search for it in wikipedia |
Jan-07-07 | | extremepleasure: Does anyone have the moves of the games of the match between The Turk and Philidor here? |
Feb-27-07 | | AAAAron: If Napoleon had only known that "The Turk" was operated by a human sitting inside, I'm sure he would of had him shot for defeating him in a game of chess. I wonder how accurate this game is? |
Apr-05-07 | | Realturka: 12.Kh2 ... Why? why doesn't he just 'pawn' the knight? |
Apr-05-07 | | rahidz2003: <Realturka> : I think it's so that the other knight doesn't fork the king and queen. |
May-05-07 | | sammy desandoli: The "Turk" was a chess playing machine. They actually had a player hiding in a magicians cabinet with a complicated set of gears and levers to move the pieces. The " Turk" ended its career giving exhibitions in the USA . The chess player had to be small because the cabinet was cramped. There is an excelent book published several years ago about "the turk". |

Not all the directors of the Automaton were diminutive. Several, such as Boncourt and Schlumberger, were over 6' tall (http://sbchess.sinfree.net/Mulhouse...). |
May-10-07 | | jellyace: What's the matter with a3??? To prevent ... Nb4 and ... Nxc2+? Why not just 0-0 or d3? Oops, sorry, I forgot this was a 19th century game. |
May-26-07 | | realbrob: 2.Qf3???? I feel I'm going to cry.. The man inside the Turk wasn't a bad player, or at least not bad enough to be defeated with a Scholar's Mate. |
Jun-18-07 | | coolchessguy123: I have and read the book called "The Turk" it was pretty good and they talk about taking it from place to place to play people. It was an automaton but actually had a person inside it. |
Jun-18-07 | | spacetimereality: It is indicated that this game is played in 1809 in "Schloss Schönbrunn", the palace of Austrian emperors. Apparently Napoleon played this game during his invasion of Austria. |
Jul-29-07 | | Andreiko: 7. Qb3 is better than Qd3...Napoleon was to much impeded whit the knight defense...reply? |
Aug-09-07 | | Crowaholic: <Giancarlo: I believe the scholars mate is: 1.f3 e5 2.g4 Qh4#> No, that's the fool's mate. The scholar's mate has several variations, for instance 1. e4 e5 2. Qf3 d6 3. Bc4 Nc6?? 4. Qxf7#. The first 3 moves are seen in the music video to One Night in Bangkok, by the way. So Napoleon did try to apply the scholar's mate. The problem is that while this may work against the unwary beginner, playing it against a chess master is silly because it's easily defended against and there are better developing moves than Bc4 and especially Qf3 at this point. Woody Harrelson is another famous (as in not-famous-for-chess) person who tried to scholar's mate a chess master, see W Harrelson vs Kasparov, 1999
Surprisingly, he was still able to draw. But then it's said GM Yasser Seirawan helped him a bit with finding the right moves... |

Sep-07-07 | | likestofork: < keres777: Don't know if this would be a good GoTD, but a nice pun would be : 'Battle of Waterloo'. :-) > Considering we have a Turk and a Christian, and adding to that the level of play, how about 'The Patzer's Crusade'? |
Sep-07-07 | | dehanne: Pity the immortal game between the Baron von Münchhausen & the Turk is not in the database. |
Dec-06-07 | | Komapsimnita: Was it seen as bad manners to resign back in the day. If he had resigned, more of his army would have survived! Wee man syndrome.
