Nov-03-05  lopium: Ahahazz!! The coment "nice Knight sac"! Make me laugh very much. As if the thing was to overlooked very fast the game at midnight to be the first who comment something else than "first", but here wasn't really better, maybe worst! Not bad say first, but to describe something like nice knight sac when there's not knight sac but something that could be thinking of a such a sac.... funny!!!!!!!!! ahahz!
Nov-03-05  weary willy: Hi Lopium - take it easy - you're 9 months late and about 6 lines too long
Nov-03-05  EmperorAtahualpa: LOL <weary willy>

A nice GOTD! 24.Rxb7, a nice move!

I wonder what explains the pun of this GOTD?

Nov-03-05  markantony: i guess 1. a3 and the nice mate at the end explain it maybe
Nov-03-05  weary willy: I think it's just a reference to the classical musician http://w3.rz-berlin.mpg.de/cmp/mend... - whose name is spelled differently - and who preferred classical QP openings
Nov-03-05  Koster: Must be offhand game or simul. Morphy could have played it blindfold.
Nov-03-05  JohnBoy: Pretty weak GOTD. Yesterday's was excellent. I'm still praying for a serious discussion about DeFirmian vs Vallejo-Pons, 2003 when it becomes GOTD.
Nov-03-05  ajile: Black's O-O-O into the open B file was a mistake and then he missed 18.Nxe4 where Black's F pawn is pinned. Instead of 17...h6 Black plays Kb8 to avoid losing a pawn.
Nov-03-05  lopium: <weary willy> hehe, thanksxz. But there ain't a knight sac.
Nov-03-05  kevin86: There is no knight sac-there may be a night sack, also known as a bed,but not in this game. There isn't even a rook sac,it is more like a loan at shark rates:either queen or mate is the payment just a few moves later.
Nov-03-05  ReikiMaster: Yes <ajile>, black played more sour notes than just one!

Sneaky: <Pretty weak GOTD> Tarrasch's Dreihundert Schachpartien contains no weak games, much less the first game!
Nov-03-05  weisyschwarz: I think Black's pieces were in concert for about 10 or 11 moves or so. I think he should have sent his queen out to the K-side first.
Nov-03-05  chesscrazy: Tarrasch has only played 1.a3 once and decided to use it against Mendelson. Mendelson has played Tarrasch 8 times and lost every time.
Nov-03-05  CowardlyKnight: Was this a blitz game? Black's play is horrible.
Nov-03-05  schnarre: A textbook Anderssen!!
Nov-03-05  JohnBoy: Sorry <Sneaky> - black's play here was amateurish. I like Tarrasch and have no problem with his play, just with this as GOTD.
Nov-08-05  schnarre: Black's play was acceptable for the first several moves, but it appears Tarrasch read him like an open book from move 1.
Oct-27-08  alfa.vimapa: who is Mendelson? I looked up all of his games and all are lost!!
Dec-20-08  YoungEd: Actually, Black's first move is an error, in a way. 1. a3 actually makes since when White can create a reversed Sicilian, since a pawn on a3 is usually a good thing. Against other Black first moves such as d5 or g6, the pawn on a3 doesn't have as much point.
Jun-05-09  WhiteRook48: and there are many games that go 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 a6 (!)
Jun-05-09  chillowack: This looks like a simul game. White rated Black's play so low that he felt justified in playing 1.a3. Mendelson looks like about a C-player or so (17...h6??).

Diocletian: I got 47 for par 50 guessing moves. It bothered me the whole game that White's dark squared bishop was inactive, but this did not bother Siegbert much. He didn't move the bishop even once.
Apr-21-22  DaviesNjugunah: tarrach says that move 6.bg4 is not good as the bishop belongs on e6 but he never said why, bg4 looks logical
Oct-21-23  Deni2: i suppose e6 creates additional support for the knight and puts pressure on d5 afterwards, e6 does nothing, but forces black to retreat or senselessly exchange the bishop.

but i dont understand his idea of sacrificing black knight on d4 and necessity to prevent it
