Mar-05-06  sneaky pete: <al wazir> In your line (15.Qxc3 Be2 16.Bxe2 Rxe2) 17... Qxd4? just gives away a piece for a second pawn (20.Be3 .. or 20.Bc3 .. keeps the extra bishop). After 17.Bb2 Qd5 black should win with best play and after 17.Be3 Qd5 the locked in rook cannot be collected (but 18.Rab1 .. may give counterchances). I can imagine the whites were disgusted enough at this point to resign, or maybe the game is incomplete.
Mar-05-06  Tariqov: <al wazir>i spot an error in your calculation!!You posted that after 15Qxc3 Be2 16.Bxe2 Rxe2 that if white makes ANY OTHER MOVE other than 17Bb2 or Be3 that Black plays Nxd4 with a two pawn advanatge.what if 17Qxc6? or 17d5? white will not be able to play Nxd4 and won't get a 2 pawn advanatge :)
Mar-05-06  EmperorAtahualpa: <notsodeepthought> What's a gama?
Mar-05-06  harcee sarmiento: uninteresting game
Mar-05-06  itz2000: why isn't 13..Qxc3 a free Knight?
Mar-05-06  dakgootje: <Tariqov> I think dear <al wazir> meant any reasonably move, instead of any move ;-)

<notsodeepthought> Can you please enlighten us what you meant with gama? =p

<EmperorAtahualpa> That first pic is very...clear =)

<harcee sarmiento> I think its GOTD because of the pun, not the game itself ;-)

Mar-05-06  dakgootje: <itz2000: why isn't 13..Qxc3 a free Knight?> I think because of 14. Rxe2
Mar-05-06  notsodeepthought: <EmperorAtahualpa>, <dakootje> I guess my attempt to render "Good Game" with an Italian accent didn't work. Oh well, back to the drawing board.
Mar-05-06  EmperorAtahualpa: Great pun. :)

The thing I like most about Gouda is its beautiful city hall:

http://www.smaniotto.net/gouda_muni...

Mar-05-06  EmperorAtahualpa: <notsodeepthought> LOL good joke. :) I guess <dakgootje> and I didn't understand it because Gouda is not pronounced "Gooda". Indeed, that's how many foreigners pronounce it.
Mar-05-06  notsodeepthought: Wow, that's city hall? Amazing! So how *is* "Gouda" pronounced then? Might as well get it right for my future cheese-shopping forays.
Mar-05-06  dakgootje: <I guess my attempt to render "Good Game" with an Italian accent didn't work.> Little too hard for me to understand today ;-)

Now...how to explain how to pronounce Gouda..

Mar-05-06  psmith: <dakgootje> I think "Gouda" is pronounced something like "Howdah", but the initial "h" has a bit of a "ch" to it. Is that anywhere close?
Mar-05-06  McCool: That's some Gouda chess(e).
Tried to do a double pun.
Mar-05-06  Autoreparaturwerkbau: I proudly present my first game, that was later selected as the GOTD. Quite a honour :) The game itself is a crap though.
Mar-05-06  Autoreparaturwerkbau: Heck, maybe i should suggest other cheese-intercity game: Gouda vs Deventer, 1857. It is a crap too, but not so extremely as first one :)

al wazir: <sneaky pete>: I goofed. I forgot that the ♗ was no longer on c4. I guess I should use a board before posting -- but that would be cheating.

The other line I considered was 15. Qxc3 Qxd4 16. Qxd4 Nxd4 17. gxf3 Nxf3+. Black has a ♘ and three ♙s for two ♗s. I like his chances, but that's hardly a winning advantage.

Maybe we should ask CG why they gave us this dud in the first place?

Mar-05-06  MarkN: anybody know of more games where cities play each other? i think thats kinda neat.
Mar-05-06  soberknight: <MarkN> Simply type in "City" to the lower search function on the front screen (not the top line, but the lower level which offers all the options: under "Player Name", type "city"). There are a couple of weird historical items on that list.

Mar-05-06  kevin86: A good matchup would be Gouda vs Bordeaux,France-----a real wine and cheese matchup, lol

A fun game on an off day.

Mar-06-06  EmperorAtahualpa: <I think "Gouda" is pronounced something like "Howdah", but the initial "h" has a bit of a "ch" to it. Is that anywhere close?>

<psmith> Yes you're getting close indeed! The "G" in Gouda is pronounced similar to the hebrew letter "chet" (a "throat clearing sound"). the "ou" vowels in Gouda are pronounced kind of like a-oo, very hard to explain. :) The "a" in "a-oo" is like the way the British pronounce the "a" in "bath". The "oo" as in "spoon". Combine the two sounds, "a" and "oo" and you get how the Dutch pronounce "ou"!

Does that make any sense? :)

Then, the "d" in Gouda is normal, and the "a" in Gouda is similar to the way "a" is pronounced in words like "battle", but not completely like it.

Combine all those weird sounds and you get ch--a-oo--da! Gouda! :)

Mar-06-06  dakgootje: We should make some kind of sound-system-thingy so the we can pronounce the exact words and foreigners can listen to them or something...

OhioChessFan: After 15. Qxc3, surely Black would blockade the pawn with Bd5
Oct-25-14  sreeskamp: On the the pronounciation, for record sake, here a Dutch fellow for some Dutch lessons (hope my English is correct) yes, the G like the hebrew 'chet';
no, the ou not like spoon, but like in(h)ow do you pronounce that; no, the a not like in bath, but like if the dendist drills you a little of track and you scream aaaaahhhh. Next course will be on pronouncing Scheveningen. (Yes the town of that famous sicilian)
