Apr-19-06 | | notsodeepthought: A-Ward winning game. |
Apr-19-06 | | blingice: I don't really believe this game either. Still, a four piece checkmate deserves to be in my collection. |
Apr-19-06 | | Ashram64: a variation of the boden's mate.. nice ;) |
Apr-19-06 | | schnarre: 13. Qxf6+ adds insult to injury! |
Apr-19-06 | | ajile: Seems to me that 5..d5 would be a better move that maintains Black's advantage. exf3 is rather greedy. I used this opening all the time to throw off and confuse King's Gambit players. e4 e5, f4 exf, Nf3 f5. I call it The Platypus. It's similar to the Falkbeer Counter Gambit in that if White takes 4 ef then the center tension is gone, Black gives back the pawn and usually equalizes with accurate play. If White plays 4 e5 then the position becomes more closed which is psychologically the opposite of what a King's Gambit player is looking for. :o) |

Apr-19-06 | | CapablancaFan: Pretty nice "handicap" game. |

 | | al wazir: <ajile: Seems to me that 5..d5 would be a better move> What do you play after 6. Ne5 ? |
Apr-19-06 | | es0: Surprisingly similar to this game
Wardaugh vs C Brown, 1969 |
Apr-19-06 | | DAL9000: Good catch, es0. |
Apr-19-06 | | EmperorAtahualpa: Great mate! |
Apr-19-06 | | dakgootje: <Surprisingly similar to this game
Wardaugh vs C Brown, 1969> With surpringly similar names ;-) Nah okay but its a nice game, brilliancie by an unknown? ;-) |

Apr-19-06 | | SJP: <ajile>
Yes. 5...exf3 makes this similar to the strong Muzio Gambit, which is usually 1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. Nf3 g5 4. Bc4 g4 5. 0-0 gxf3 6. Qxf3 with everything gunning for f7. |
Apr-19-06 | | SJP: <al wazir>
6. Ne5 dxc4 7. Kh1 Qd5 8. Ng4 h5 9. Nf2 Bf5 10. Nc3 Nf6 seems likely |
Apr-19-06 | | United33: nice mate combination |
Apr-19-06 | | itz2000: I'm pretty sure I've seen a mate like this by Fischer, in a game I've seen few days ago...
something pretty similar. |

 | | chessgames.com: <A-Ward winning game> Very good indeed; wish we thought of it. |
Apr-19-06 | | chiguire: It took me a while to figure out why black chose 11. Qd7 instead of Nxd5, and then I saw that if he had done Nxd5 it would have been mate in two moves. I guess that is just evidence of my rookiness to the game.
Nice Game! (for white at least) |

 | | al wazir: <SJP: 6. Ne5 dxc4 7. Kh1 Qd5 8. Ng4 h5 9. Nf2 Bf5 10. Nc3 Nf6 seems likely> I was thinking along the lines of 6...dxc4 7. Qh5+ g6 8. Nxg6. Why did you suggest 7. Kh1 ? |
Apr-19-06 | | Jack Kerouac: Ward used to beat June Cleaver as well, but the Beaver had Wally 'straighten him out'. |
Apr-19-06 | | kevin86: The opening was different:like a reverse-side Muzio. This is even inferior to the Muzio for black as his king position is even more open. A-Ward winning game, rather clever-(or did I say Cleaver?) pun. |
Apr-19-06 | | ajile: <al wazir: <SJP: 6. Ne5 dxc4 7. Kh1 Qd5 8. Ng4 h5 9. Nf2 Bf5 10. Nc3 Nf6 seems likely>
I was thinking along the lines of 6...dxc4 7. Qh5+ g6 8. Nxg6. Why did you suggest 7. Kh1 ?> Actually Black doesn't have to take the bishop on move 6. Simply 6...Bc5+ or 6...Nf6 and what does White do now? At the very least he's giving Black a nice center with no compensation. |
Apr-19-06 | | ajile: Note that after 6...Bc5+ Black will followup with 7...Nf6 ruining White's plan of QH5+. |
Apr-19-06 | | Landman: It's an odds game. White started a Knight down. |
Apr-19-06 | | chiguire: Thanks for the correction <chanco and Landman> I have deleted my rantings.
I guess this is another evidence of my rookiness to the game.
Thanks |

I guess this is another evidence of my rookiness to the game. > It is actually better to leave such posts in. No problem with being a 'rookie' or confused about something. But deleting comments that are already imbedded in the sequence creates lots of hanging, non-sequitur posts. And welcome to the site! |
