Nov-24-07  Arkaynan: 30. ♕h6#
Sep-29-08  KOCMOHAYT: nice monday- tuesday puzzle after ..27 Ne4.
Oct-07-08  ToTheDeath: 28.Rxh7+. Basic attacking pattern.
Oct-07-08  zooter: One more easy one...though this one took a bit for me to see as the white pawn on g5 was not readily visible

28.Rxh7+ Kxh7 (forced) 29.Qh3+ Kg7 (only move) 30.Qh6#

Oct-07-08  tjshann: Very easy. Like yesterday, Black played on. When Capablanca sacs a Rook, you might look a move or two ahead and tip your King.
Oct-07-08  zb2cr: Looks as though I'm first. The key feature here is the constricted position of the Black King. The White Bishop (and Knight) take away flight via f7; the White Pawn on g5 takes away flight via f6. It seems natural to consider sacrificing the Knight via 28. Nxg6+ or 28. Nf7+. Neither of those seem to lead to anything; the Black Bishop on e8 defends f7 or g6 well.

Turning to the Rooks, 28. Rxh7+ suggests itself. This looks much better; 28. ... Kxh7 is forced, whereupon 29. Qh3+ bring the Queen into the fight. Black has only one legal move, 29. ... Kg7, met by 30. Qh6#.

Oct-07-08  dzechiel: White to play (28?). Material even. "Easy."

Once again, a completely forcing sequence.

28 Rxh7+ Kxh7 29 Qh3+ Kg7 30 Qh6#

Black has only one legal move at each step. If you didn't get this position, consider a book like "Beginning Chess" by Bruce Pandolfini.

Time to check and see if this went to mate.

Oct-07-08  zb2cr: Bah, I have to retract the fatuous comment about my being first. True at the time I typed it, but not at the time it was finally posted.
Oct-07-08  ed gantro: hi everybody, i couldn't see the last insane, could anyone reveal it to me? thank you

An Englishman: Good Evening: If you're going to let your opponent build up an overwhelming position like this, at least force him or her to sacrifice something to get here!
Oct-07-08  White Star: what was 17) a4 for?
Oct-07-08  VooDooMoves: With the black King in the corner with only 2 <safe squares>, namely g7 & h8, and not dsb for white only one move jumps out: 28. Rxh7+

1)28. Rxh7+ Kxh7 (forced) and now the <reloader> 29. Qh3+ Kg7 <stalemated king> 30. Qh6#.

Oct-07-08  whitebeach: Black had to try 27 . . . Nh5. It looks ugly, but there seems to be no immediate win for white, and there is even the modest threat of 28 . . . Nf4. On the other hand, 27 . . . Ne4?? must have come from some sort of hallucination.
Oct-07-08  VooDooMoves: It takes a lot longer but 28. Nd5 also seems to win.

1 line runs 28. Nd5 Qe7 29. Qd4+ Nf6 30. gxf6 Rxf6 31. Rxh7+ Kxh7 (31...Qxh7 32. Qxf6+) 32. Qh4+ Kg8 33. Ng5+ and now

a) 33...Kf8 34. Qh8#

b)33...Bf7 34. Qh7+ Kf8 35. Qh8+ Bg8 36. Qxg8#

c) 33...Rf7 34. Qh7+ Kf8 35. Qh8#

Oct-07-08  VooDooMoves: <whitebeach> After 27...Nh5 White seems to have the better of it after 28. Nd5 Qe7 29. Qd4+ Ng7 30. Kf2! and black is all tied up.

White is threatening to double up on the h-file and since 30...h5 gxh6 e.p. is bad black has 30...Bf7 31. Rdh1 Bxe6 32. Rxh7+ Kg8 33. Bxe6+! and whichever way black recaptures it's mate and blocking doesn't work as white mates on h8. Probably not exactly forced but it does show that black has a difficult game and was bound to lose

Oct-07-08  lost in space: 28. Rxh7+ Kxh7 29. Qh3+ Kg7 30. Qh6#

Nothing to add. Time to check

Oct-07-08  Kasputin: 28. Rxh7+ Kxh7
29. Qh3+ Kg7
30. Qh6#

Very nice. All forced. I tip my capa.

Oct-07-08  missingkasparov: voo doo you still at it?
Oct-07-08  Ladolcevita: What if black27...Nh5?
Oct-07-08  MostlyAverageJoe: < VooDooMoves: It takes a lot longer but 28. Nd5 also seems to win>

Except that this N that is sitting on e5 after move 27, and cannot move legally to d5.

Oct-07-08  YouRang: I bet Capablanca solved it at *least* as fast as I did.
Oct-07-08  newzild: 1.Rxh7+

This is a Monday-level puzzle.

Oct-07-08  newzild: ed gantro: hi everybody, i couldn't see the last insane, could anyone reveal it to me? thank you

The game was Grooten-Motylev 2003.

Oct-07-08  whiteshark: # in 3
Oct-07-08  KOCMOHAYT: Una petite combination
